By Justin Smulison
A Life Divided is an alternative metal band from Germany who have released six albums, the last five of which are available from AFM Records. Their latest LP, Down the Spiral of a Soul, is a collection of songs that reflect the tumult of the last three years and push back against critics of their 2020 release, Echoes.
Full disclosure: Echoes was my introduction to the band and I adore the album – it’s a danceable alt-metal album with extra flourishes of 1980s-style New Wave synth hits and the occasional pop-style chorus. Down the Spiral of A Soul maintains some of the vibe from its predecessor, but the band pushes themselves into faster and perhaps more ferocious territory. For that reason, I have a push-pull relationship with the album as far as its play on my emotions.
Lead singer Jürgen Plangger spoke with Jace Media contributor Justin Smulison about the lyrical and sonic depths explored on Spiral, highlights from Echoes (including an impromptu sing-a-long of “Dry Your Eyes”) and 2013’s The Great Escape. They also toy with the idea of playing a set in Justin’s backyard, which would indeed be “The Best Time.”
