Amidst the wintry December air, our rendezvous at Coulsdon’s Comrades Club for the famed Tuesday Night Music Club felt like a familiar ritual. Engaging in lively banter with the regulars, it became apparent that few in my proximity had encountered the tunes of Jimmy Regal and the Royals before. Yet, as we settled in, an experienced regular assured us of the treat awaiting us that night. The stage was adorned with four microphones, while a saxophone and trumpet nestled in the corner heightened anticipation for a musical spectacle.

Our host for the evening, Richard Dunning, graciously introduced the trio that had already assumed their positions on stage. The initial repertoire, comprising two or three songs, wove together mesmerizing vocals and extraordinary harmonica performances by Joff Watkins, known as Jimmy Regal. Sammy Samuels on drums and CJ Williams on guitar masterfully crafted the rhythmic tapestry, despite the absence of a bass guitar. As the night unfurled, Titch Walker on trumpet and John O’Neil on saxophone joined, elevating the performance to new crescendos.

The music effortlessly oscillated between swamp rock and blues, occasionally delving into soul-stirring, bluesy rhythms. The contagious energy radiating from the stage intertwined with the audience’s enthusiasm, forging an unforgettable atmosphere. An amusing thematic thread emerged, centred around a playful obsession with chicken, epitomized in memorable tracks like “Fat Man’s Chicken” and ‘Late Night Chicken,’ leading to joyous sing-alongs.

Their latest album, ‘First and Last Stop,’ took centre stage throughout the two riveting sets, witnessing brisk sales at the merchandise stand during intervals and after the show. Despite the majority being unacquainted with the band, Jimmy Regal and the Royals captivated a near-packed, vibrant crowd. A standing ovation at the set’s end signified the audience’s profound enjoyment, leaving the band visibly moved.

The encore was met with enthusiastic applause, culminating in an evening that was not just electric but profoundly gratifying. Thanks to Richard Dunning, Simon Taylor of EQ Audio, and the bar staff for their invaluable contributions. However, the most heartfelt appreciation was reserved for Jimmy Regal and his Royals, whose performance etched an indelible mark on the night.
