Review By Darren McIntyre

Bex Marshall is a blues musician/songwriter based in Crouch End, London although she originally grew up in Devon. Bex started playing guitar at age 11 and at 18 began working on cruise liners to hone her musical skills, Bex cites Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin & Tina Turner as her influences. Bex has given us albums Kitchen Table in 2008, and The House Of Mercy in 2012 & on March 1st she drops her exquisite new offering Fortuna, from that comes the opening blues explosion of 5 am which I will be reviewing for you today.

5 am – The opening guitar lick is just a delicious blend of blues with a hint of darkness as the subtle rhythm section comes at us with a sweet smooth cymbal snap that is joined by a solid snare drum beat. The tinkering of the Hammond keys is just awesome as this toe-tapping blues track just grabs you and won’t let you leave as it wraps itself around you and wants to let you feel the depth and emotion pouring from this incredible piece of music. There is a colossal bassline that just takes your breathe away as it hands us mellow funk tones that just set this track apart, the whole arrangement is steeped in soulful melodic vocals that deliver a strong force of nature that instantly stops us in our tracks as this fantastic track really warms the heart with its epic tones and thought-provoking lyrics that tell a story as the track allows us to wander off to another place and feel the tone just lift us to somewhere else. The guitar work is just incredible as Bex & Toby just create an incredible wall of sound that leaves us wanting more from this incredible artist as she puts it all on the line with her captivating vocals and incredible guitar work that just oozes brilliance from the outset.
