Our occasional visits to the Cavern Freehouse in Raynes Park have become less frequent for various reasons, especially with the current freezing weather posing an additional challenge. However, there are bands so exceptional that they compel us to brave the icy conditions and don our winter coats. Vambo, a formidable four-piece heavy rock band, unquestionably falls into that category!

Arriving early at the Cavern allowed us to secure a decent seat, and soon the venue buzzed with the energy of enthusiastic music fans. Vambo’s performance kicked off right on schedule, enveloping the stage in smoke and the resonance of their theme tune. Jack Stiles, with his powerhouse voice and charismatic presence, took centre stage. Peter Lance on guitar unleashed thunderous energy, captivating the audience from the very first chord. Dave Flitt, the dynamic drummer, played a pivotal role in Vambo’s signature style, skillfully balancing power and subtlety. James Scott’s provocative bass lines added depth and vigour to their performance.

Interestingly, the band’s name, “Vambo,” pays homage to a Mud track called “Vambo Rools.” Jack Stiles’s father, Ray Stiles, was the bassist for the famous ’70s band Mud, and Vambo covers the track on their first album.

Performing two one-hour sets and an encore, Vambo treated the Cavern audience to a plethora of great music. The band’s emphasis on classic rock melodies and ranges, without indulging in lengthy guitar solos, provided a refreshing experience. The Freehouse Cavern pulsed with energy on that Thursday evening, featuring tracks from both Vambo’s first and second albums, alongside well-chosen covers.

With Ray Stiles managing the sound desk, the volume levels were impeccable, creating an immersive Vambo experience for the audience. While a few fans danced, most stood or sat, sometimes fully immersed in the musical journey that Vambo delivered, and at other times, belting out the catchy lyrics of their better-known songs.

In summary, catching a Vambo performance is undoubtedly worth it, both for the outstanding music and the sheer entertainment value. It was a pleasure to have a little chat with Gina Hurley, manning the merch desk. Our best wishes for your mum’s continued improvement.
