EP- Beautiful Chaos
Release date – 22nd January.
Review by Linda McDermott
Lovelorn Dolls are a Belgian duo consisting of Kristell Lowagie – lyrics and vocals and Bernard Daubresse – music, guitars and production who specialise in gothic synth-rock music.
If you love bands such as Lacuna Coil, The Birthday Massacre, Theatre of Tragedy, and Evanescence, well you’re going to be a fan of Lovelorn Dolls.
Their latest release is the EP ‘Beautiful Chaos’, it is different in that it features one song with five bonus versions of the same track that have been subtly remixed, this is something I’ve not reviewed before, so I was very interested to hear all six versions.
The band says about the track. “As the music unfolds, so too does the unravelling mystery of each character’s story. The idea behind this song is to talk about divorce or separation in the broad sense, especially when a relationship is toxic. In general, the problems do not stop there, especially when there are children who become an issue or a means of pressure. Sometimes it gets even more chaotic. As for the title of the song ‘Beautiful Chaos’, it is of course to be taken ironically”.
Track list
1.Beautiful Chaos
2.Beautiful Chaos (AudioPyre remix)
3.Beautiful Chaos (Restriction 9 remix)
4.Beautiful Chaos (Absynthe of Faith remix)
5.Beautiful Chaos (The Breath of Life remix)
6.Beautiful Chaos (Antidote for Annie remix)
‘Beautiful Chaos’ is a powerful song that is intricate and compelling as it unravels a story that is both dark and intense with six subtly distinct versions. Each version brings a unique flavour, in particular, the third remix, ‘Beautiful Chaos’ (Restriction 9 remix) has a pulsating dance beat that is lively and energetic, while the sixth version, ‘Antidote for Annie remix’ builds with a heartbeat undercurrent that has a more chilling feel to it. Lovelorn Dolls multifaceted approach adds a lot of depth to this song, and with six versions to choose from, it allows listeners to decide which they prefer. For me, my favourite one is the first version, it is commanding from the start and packs a punch full of passionate power as the track unfolds both musically and vocally.
The band have an accompanying video for the song of which they say, ‘The video thrusts their tiny girl protagonist into a descent towards a darker world, trapping her in a padded asylum room haunted by beautifully chaotic characters.

Having watched the video I feel it takes your focus away from how good the song is, as you try to work out what is actually going on with the main character. However, that is something you can decide for yourself.
I am intrigued by this band and will be downloading more tracks by them to satisfy my curiosity.
