Single – Last Orders
Release Date – 24th January.
Review by Linda McDermott
We all know Liverpudlians can sing, right? Well, the indie band The Cheap Thrills just continue to prove it’s true. They have a new EP coming out on the 21st of February, called ‘Mind Metro’, and just to whet your appetite they’ve given you a little teaser with a cracking single from it called ‘Last Orders’ which is out on the 24th of January.
The Cheap Thrills showcase a brilliant blend of infectious beats and a lively, bouncy rhythm that has me foot-tapping along right from the start. It gets going with a distorted guitar running under the vocals that disappears and reappears throughout the track. I’m hooked on its upbeat tone from the very first listen, with its bouncy summer party feel and singalong chorus. It has some very nice intricate guitar riffs intertwining seamlessly with vibrant synths, creating a gutsy sound that draws inspiration from the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and The Foals.
The songs overall vibe radiates positivity and cheeriness, even though lyrically it’s as frontman Lewis Pike says, “It’s a song about the worst time of the best nights, the thrill of the chase. ‘Last Orders’ explores the comedy and tragedy of going home alone when you don’t find love on a Friday night.” I think we can all relate to that at one point or another in our lives, not that I’m admitting it!
‘Last Orders’ is an ideal addition to any playlist seeking an energetic and feel-good atmosphere. I can hear it on loud with the windows open driving to see them at a festival somewhere. With its compelling music, the single not only stands out on its own but also hints at the promising direction the band is headed with their upcoming release. Fans of indie music are sure to find this track an exciting glimpse into the band’s evolving sound, and those who are new to The Cheap Thrills, will, after hearing this single, download previous releases as well as put the 21st of February in their diary for the EP.
Lucky for us The Cheap Thrills will also be playing their own headline shows in February and March including a huge hometown gig on the 2nd of March. The band have also been announced to perform at Vest Rock festival in the Netherlands this summer.
