Review By Darren McIntyre
Freya Beer is a singer/songwriter from West London who came to our attention in 2018 with her debut singles Bike Boy & Six Months. Freya brings a devil-may-care attitude that has disparate gothic influences running through her haunting lyrics, Freya has been on BBC Introducing Live Lounge Sessions, Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6 Music. Freya brought us her debut album Beast in 2021, fast forward to 2023 when she gave us double AA side single Fantasy / Galore and this has allowed her the opportunity to appear at Latitude Festival and support Honeyblood, make her live US debut in New York City, 2024 sees her bring us her new single Write Her Off(Who) which I will be reviewing for you today.
Write Her Off(Who) – The full-on pounding beat brings the soulful grungy groover to our attention as the sweet soulful vocals pour into this toe-tapping piece. Cool deep bassline notes wrap themselves around this gothic-themed arrangement as the rhythm section chimes in with meaty snare drum punches that come armed with a killer bass kick that is finished with cymbal crashes that bring a real heavy groove to this melodic composition as the sweet clean vocals elevate this classy track. The whole track has depth, swagger and a real gritty feeling that lets us know that Freya is maturing into a musician who is bringing her craft to our attention and letting us feel the music as it smacks us straying in the face and leaves us wanting more.
