Review By Smudge Smith
When a band describes their music as ‘boogie metal’ and has their signature beer (man, do I like beer!) I reckon they must be worth a listen! Formed out of the punk and hardcore scene in Boston in 2012 Leather Lung has knocked out some really well-received EP’s and here they have given us their first full-length.
Big distorted guitars open ‘Spit In The Casket’ and it’s an easy groove that gets your head nodding with some rough ‘n ready vocals from Mike that make you sit up and listen. Oh yeah, the boogie comes in on the ZZ Top grind of ‘Big Bad Bodega Cat’ before the crushing ‘Freewheelin’ Maniac’ and the monstrous ‘Empty Bottle Boogie’ – sure to be a classic! This is huge and rocks like a bastard – loud, dirty and nasty rock n roll. ‘Guilty Pleasures’ brings some grinding doom to start before drummer Ben pounds out a tempo change, and off they go on a brutal chunk of hardcore groove metal. ‘Macrodose Interlude’ gives us 90 seconds of fuzzed bass and some raging guitar before the insistent groove and tribal rhythm of ‘La La Land’ gets you moving again. ‘Twisting Flowers’ brings a huge dose of doom with a death metal vocal in parts before the kinda funky psych intro of ‘Headstone’ has you dreaming before they crank it up on another massive death groove. ‘Cornered Animal’ has a huge bass riff and another harsh vocal before the death blues boogie of ‘Raised Me Rowdy’ finishes things off.
These guys know their stuff and they mix it up really well. Some of the vocals are harsh but the grooves and riffs keep it real. It’s rough, it’s raw and it’s loud but there are some subtleties that keep things interesting.
