Crashing out of Northern Quebec come Backstabber with their second EP. The four songs are loosely based on ‘The Celestine Prophecy’ by James Redfield where the four patterns serve to canalize someone else’s attention and energy which, together, forms an endless cycle of consumption that breaks the victim down from the inside out. Doesn’t sound pretty.
‘Harvesting The Weak’ gets us off to a rattling start with a double-picked riff and battering ram rhythm that slams hard and true. It’s not all about the bludgeon as they go through some darkly melodic lines before going back to the brutality. Shit gets real on ‘Langues Sales’ where Theriault and St Jacques crank up the axe work and Hull keeps up the pace with some monumental double kick drum action that is sure to get necks snapping. Things come down on the darker and sinister ‘Crawling Through Your Bones’. Slower and heavier just marvel at the sounds that Cryptopsy’s Christian Donaldson has conjured out of these guys.
There’s a real punch to the drums and the guitars are like razors. This track takes off on a majestic death metal donkey ride halfway through and what a ride it is. ‘Snitches Get Stitches’ is a death/thrash hybrid that sounds nasty, dirty and a little chaotic in a good way, oh and just get the synth strings in there too.
Four tracks of world-class death metal. Great sounds, great energy. Aggressive and at times dark and bleak but when they pound it out it’s a glorious noise. More please and soon!
