Review By Paul Taggart
I last saw Filter more than twenty years ago. a lot has changed in that time, all my fucking hair disappeared for a start but that is neither here nor there. I can’t comment that Filter has changed much musically since the ‘Title Of Record’ days, albums have always alternated between straight-up heavy alternative rock, light industrial metal and somewhere in between. In between is where the newest one, ‘The Algorithm’ lies, and to Filter’s credit, at least a third of their set is drawn from the album.
The support band was a newer band called Belmondo, no relation to the French actor I believe. As is usual to newer acts, the band has a small string of streaming singles to their name and not much else but still delivers in a live setting, a punchy mix of dual vocal-led alternative rock and light electronic flourishes. The song ‘RTD’ stands out with distorted vocals and punchy riffage, not that dissimilar from a Filter track if I’m honest which the band acknowledges on stage.
Ones to keep an eye on.
The feature act of course was Robert Patrick’s Filter. The hulking riff of ‘You Walk Away’ launched their set, a definite highlight of the night as it was unexpected for me. Always a big hit for me from their ‘Amalgamut’ album from 2002. The following twenty-song set alternates between mid-tempo riffage such as the newer ‘Face Down’, the likes of the anthemic ‘Take A Picture’ and the more aggressive industrial stylings of ‘Dose’. All throughout, Robert Patrick keeps the crowd engaged, careening through a seemingly endless cloud of dry ice whilst his backing band crashes and burns in an endless loop.
The night closes with the dual punch of the band’s biggest heavy hits in the form of the seething epic of ‘Welcome To The Fold’ and the crawling bass-led ‘Hey Man, Nice Shot’. Hopefully, twenty years does not pass before I see them again and I won’t lose anymore hair.
