Review
I first came across Black Lakes at the amazing Dementia Fest event in Cannock and was blown away by their live performance on the day. They have an amazingly talented frontman, are as tight as a drum musically and have the perfect image for a modern-day alternative Metal band. I purchased all their available music that very evening and once I returned home I was massively impressed with their debut album ‘For All We’ve Left Behind’. I immediately booked tickets to see them at the Tivoli in Buckley in the new year where they were supporting the mighty South Of Salem. They were off the scale that night and introduced a new song to their live set from their forthcoming album ‘Dead Gods’. That song was ‘White Cliffs’ and for me, it was the best song of the night from the band even though I hadn’t heard it before.
A couple of months down the line and ‘White Cliffs’ is the first single from the new album and it’s every bit as impressive in its studio incarnation as it was in a live setting. The thing I love about this band’s music is that it’s highly affecting, really intelligent and passionate and above all you feel that the band mean every word of their darkly intense yet ultimately positive lyrics. The track itself starts ominously before it opens out into a thunderously impressive modern Metal track that is both immediate and hugely relevant. The most difficult trick in this genre of music for me has always been that tough balancing act of combining melody and aggression but for me these guys have already mastered it and are now producing music of the highest quality. I said in my live review that these boys are an arena quality band who don’t quite realise how good they actually are but I think that will change once the new record hits the streets. I can’t wait for ‘Dead Gods’ and I’ll definitely be out to see them again this year. If they are in your area please make an extra effort to catch them in the flesh, you won’t regret it.
