Lottery Winner at The Welly Hull

Spread the love

REVIEW BY STEVE SHIPLEY

The last time The Lottery Winners played at the Welly Club Hull they played to 23 people, this time was different, very different. It was packed to the rafters and the roof was about to be blown off.

Getting the crowd warmed up was the very talented Jack Valero and his band. This very young band has a few more dates with The Lottery Winners to come and looks like a big future ahead for them.

The Lottery Winners opened with Worry and this set the scene for the night the crowd just exploded with energy.

Thom Rylance is one funny guy and his interaction with the fans is always one of the highlights of The Lottery Winners performances, It was not long before a sing-along of Hey Jude blended into Favourite Flavour, among the other songs on offer between the banter with the fans was 85 Trips, where Thom did a drawing of Kate which gave 21 people in the crowd the chance to go home with a souvenir to take home, he also informed everyone that he will be putting all the drawings in a book to sell for charity after he had found out after googling himself that someone had tried to sell a drawing on eBay for £6.50 it didn’t sell much to his disgust, I am sure that the band is far too busy to be googling themselves

Moving on to Emerald City/Caravan of Love, this had the crowd eating out of their hands with Hull being the home of The Housemartins this was always going to be a big song with everyone giving it their all as if Paul Heaton was there himself, I am sure he could hear this from wherever he was.

The unbridled enthusiasm of the band gave the fans a musical experience they will never forget finishing with Start Again and as a photographer, it was impossible to take photos as the whole of The Welly Club was bouncing so hard the Humber bridge had to be shut, well maybe not quite that hard but that’s what it felt like. It did not stop there, after going off stage and coming back for their encore they came back on to finally finish taking the roof off with what is my favourite song Letter To Myself before finishing with Burning House and the roof certainly did come off.

If you have never seen The Lottery Winners they are a must-see, one of the most hard-working bands around you will find them at festivals over the summer as well as their own tour, get yourself there you won’t regret it
