Trillians, Newcastle
Friday 12th April
Review and photographs by Linda McDermott
I love the Continental Lovers, so when I saw they were playing fifty miles away, at Trillions, Newcastle, there was no two ways about it, I was going.
If you’ve not been to Trillians in Newcastle, you are missing out on some great live performances. The pub puts on a lot of gigs to support up-and-coming bands and to top it all most of them are free, so why wouldn’t you go and support live music and the venue?
So, why do I love this band I hear you ask? Well, I was around when the Ramones toured the UK, I saw them many times, mostly at Barrowlands in Glasgow, I even had the bruises to prove it, and to this day they are my all-time favourite band.
When I first heard The Continental Lovers play at the Call of the Wild Festival last year, they took me right back to those days of glam punk rock, bopping about to great upbeat tunes that just ooze good times. I love the twist the band put on their up-tempo songs, each with a story. Not only that, but they have the style and swagger to match the music, and when they walk into the room you can’t help but notice them.
They have a string of singles behind them and a great EP, if you’ve not listened to ‘Dale Arden Vs the World’, then you really should do so now as it encapsulates what this band are all about.
Tonight, they took to the stage and Joe – vocals/guitar, Kerri – bass/backing vocals,
Ben – guitar/backing vocals and new drummer Ace, treated the audience to one great song after another, definitely no filler tunes from them. They kicked off with their new single ‘Let’s Go Out Tonight’ which is released on Friday 19th April, before launching into an array of my favourite tracks such as ……..well, all of them are, to be honest. They added another new song ‘Connection’, which is sure to be a winner and hopefully on the new EP they are working on. It was great to see so many people enjoying their music, foot-tapping along and cheering in appreciation, I don’t think anyone can fault their performance.
The guys have a very busy year planned and are gigging up and down the country as headliners and support so do go and check them out, you won’t be disappointed.
