Review By Darren McIntyre
Marcy Levy aka Marcella Detroit is a singer / songwriter / guitarist from Detroit, Michigan who originally caught our attention in 1982 with the release of her debut album Marcella. The release caught the attention of Siobhan Fahey who was putting together Shakespear’s Sister and the two got together to release 2 albums Sacred Heart in 1989 & Hormonally Yours in 1992, Marcella left the band in 1993. 1994 sees Marcella release Jewel and single I Believe which this year brings the 30th Anniversary of this fantastic album, to celebrate this milestone Marcella brings us the deluxe addition of this celebrated album and the re-release of I Believe which I will be reviewing for you.
I believe – The track begins with cool keys that really let this arrangement grab your attention from the getgo as the smooth rhythm section comes in with cool cymbal taps that let this fantastic track take us on the journey with this mesmerising artist. The smooth soulful vocals really let this track breathe as we are instantly transported to another place as the sweet acoustic strumming chords take this track to another level. The whole arrangement is just sublime as the delicious tones flow effortlessly through the composition and let us feel the intensity coming at us right now, the sultry bassline is wrapping itself around the thought provoking lyrics as the keys drive on with their sweet bluesy feel that really lets us feel the depth of this fantastic release. The whole track is a real mellow affair and has that 90’s feel but instantly gives you a sense that the re-release has something different in the arrangement that just settles us into the groove and the sultry smooth vocals that are instantly recognisable. Let yourself be transported to another place with the sweet musicianship and the thought provoking lyrics that really capture the essence of this fantastic artist.
