King Kraken – A Heavy Rock Monster Arrives in Scotland

Bannermans, Edinburgh 27th April

Review and Photographs by Linda McDermott

Tonight, I’m in Edinburgh to see three heavy rock bands at Bannermans Rock and Whiskey Bar. The bar is renowned for putting on live music seven nights a week and giving upcoming musicians and bands a platform. The room is to the side of the main bar and within it there is a small stage at the far end, with bands having to make their way through the crowd to get to it. Nevertheless, it is a venue that a lot of bands have on their list of places to play, and tonight there are three more ready to show what they’re all about.

LaVire

First to the stage are Lincoln based LaVire (pronounced laveer) who are a powerhouse of a band with two EPs to their name, ‘No Truth to Tell’, parts 1 & 2’, and a third EP ‘Chasing Sunsets coming out on the 24th of May. This band’s eclectic sound draws from various influences, including Alter Bridge, Biffy Clyro and Muse. They blend captivating melodies and harmonies that immediately grab your attention. But what truly sets them apart is Chloe’s powerful voice, injecting a raw and passionate element into their music.

With a crowd gathered in the intimate venue the band demonstrates what makes them tick and I for one love it! Their high-energy anthems, offers a range of songs that caters to a wide audience so check them out if you like your rock music on the fiery side.

Prymå

Tonight, the second band come in the form of Prymå, a heavy metal rock band from Canterbury, Kent, who are making waves on the rock scene. Prymå take to the stage on their first visit to Bannermans, with Dom going all out and buying a kilt for the occasion.

Led by powerhouse Gabby, they unleashed a whole load of attitude and presence onto the audience, singing a selection of songs from a string of singles and their stonking EP ‘Uncaged’.

Gabby, Dom, Anthony and Max very skilfully bring the lyrics to life with a heavy metal sound that is gutsy and charged and full of angst. Their songs are intense from the start with emotions and energy running through them.

Check out the video on the link below for their last single to get a flavour of the band’s music.

With what seems to be no time at all their set is coming to an end, but not before some audience participation with everyone singing ‘freaky’ back to the band for ‘Freaky Fright Night’.

King Kraken

Headliners tonight is a five-piece Welsh band consisting of Mark Donoghue-vocals, Adam Healey-lead guitar, Pete Rose-rhythm guitar, Karl Meyer-bass and Richard Mears-drums. Preparing the stage for their set wasn’t easy, especially as they had blow up tentacles (yes, I have spelt that right!) that had a mind of their own, but once they were tamed the band took to the stage.

Playing songs from their debut album MCLXXX and five new songs they launched into them at a rate of naughts playing my favourites ’Bastard Liar’ and ‘Green Terror’. The new songs were in a similar vein to those on the album except for one which was a slower more melodic track which Mark dedicated to a member of the audience. The song was called ‘Hero’ and about losing someone dear to you and was very emotional for him to sing.

King Kraken are all about heavy bass, guitar riffs and deep menacing tones and they do this without question. With five new songs under their belt, it shouldn’t be too long before they produce a second album so keep your eye out for that. Meantime, why don’t you give them a follow and check out the videos on the links below.

Unfortunately, I had to leave just before the end to catch the dreaded last train home on a Saturday evening. But I had a great night, filled with heavy melodic tunes sung and performed by three great bands, which more than makes up for that awful one-hour long train journey.
