By Justin Smulison
Metal vocalist Wade Black has been a force in genre since his debut as the singer on Crimson Glory’s Astronomica in 1998. Since that time, he’s gone on to front several bands and projects, including Leatherwolf, Seven Witches, Leash Law, and Chalice of Sin.
He has wholeheartedly embraced his metal roots with The Awakening, the first offering from Wade Black’s Astronomica. Released worldwide by ROAR! Rock of Angels Records, The Awakening features 10 metal epics that capture the spirit of the American singer’s time with Crimson Glory while expanding the lyrical themes to tackle more personal topics. Though the video for “Destiny” might feature one’s suspecting an alien presence, the lyrics explore one’s internal struggles and the purpose of their existence.
In March, the band toured Greece for its “Set Hellas On Fire” run, playing club shows as well as the Horns Up and the Up The Hammers festivals. Upon his return of the successful shows, Black connected with Jace Media contributor Justin Smulison, who is a big fan.
Smulison spoke with Black about The Awakening, prior collaborators like Martin Jepsen Andersen and Alessandro Del Vecchio, and the responsibility of having “Wade Black” embedded in the band’s name.
