Review By Darren McIntyre
Darnell ‘Big D’ Cole is an Americana / rock musician from Pasadena, California who started life as a musician at a young age as his parents were in a top 40 covers band. Darnell started to experiment with music picking up a bass aged 10 and started tinkering with original music, aged 15 he picked up a guitar and later wrote his first song. Aged 18 Darnell became an EMT and this shaped his outlook on life and he can often be heard quoting Music heals the wounds that medicine can’t fix, 2011 sees Darnell release his first solo acoustic album which led to him putting together a talented bunch of musicians and forming Porcelain Hill and touring the UK in 2019 which brought great reviews. 2020 brought the Pandemic and this ultimately brought the demise of the band, undeterred Darnell put together Darnell Cole & The Vibe which allowed him to set about recording music and giving us a tour of the UK, Darnell brought us his new album A Man Of Soul and from that come this killer new track Life On The Run which I will be reviewing for you today.
Life On The Run – From the off we get a real sludgy blues guitar riff that brings in a punchy rhythm section that allows this foot tapping groover the room it needs to grow. The cool bluesy vocals bring a gravelly tone that just kicks in the doors and really gives this track depth, swagger and bags of soul, the funk element is a real 70’s feel that just stops you in your tracks as the boys deliver a funk laden blues eruption that has a fuzzy groove running through it. The rhythm section hits us with a solid snare drum kick that is wrapped in bass kicks and cymbal smashes that just opens this blues explosion and lets us know that Darnell Big D is here and showing us what he is made of with this toe tapping, fist punching blues rock track that is just on the money.
