By Justin Smulison

Most metal fans know Mark Zonder first and foremost as the longtime drummer for Fates Warning. But prior to his time in that trailblazing prog-metal band, Zonder was behind the kit for Warlord, an outstanding epic metal band co-led by guitarist Bill Tsamis. Rooted in doom metal and rock, the band has had intermittent output in the 40 years since its inception.

Tsamis sadly passed in 2021, but Zonder has kept the quintet active, most notably by recruiting renowned singer Giles Lavery to front Warlord for live shows and the newest album, Free Spirit Soar, released worldwide from High Roller Records. The new album features Jimmy Waldo on keyboards/synthesizer, Phillip Bynoe on bass and Eric Juris on guitars.

Zonder and Lavery joined Jace Media Contributor Justin Smulison to discuss the making of the album, which was recorded between March and September 2023, and how it pays tribute to the musical heritage of Tsamis.

They also talk about past collaborations, such as Highway Sentinels with David Reece, and Zonder’s new group with Bynoe and former Fates bandmate Ray Alder, A-Z.

Quick note – since recording the interview, Warlord has been added to the roster for Day 2 of the Golden R Festival in Greece on Aug. 30, 2024.
