Review By Smudge
It’s been a while since I reviewed anything by Italian stoners Kayleth. It was way back in 2015 that I had the pleasure of listening to the wonderfully titled ‘Space Muffin’. Since then, they have released two further records, but they’ve obviously passed me by.
Kayleth waste no time getting straight to on ‘The Throne’ with a big chunky riff and reverb drenched vocals before the grind of ‘The Night’ goes darker and the psych of ‘Giants March’ where the keys of Michele Montanari add texture and flavour as guitarist Massimo Dalla Valle shows his chops with some wonderful fretwork. ‘Weak Heart’ gets going on a tribal rhythm from drummer Danielle Pedrollo and bassist Alessandro Zanetti before Enrico Gastaldo roars his voice hoarse, but it comes down on a psych vibe with some simple bright lines from Dalla Valle.
‘Megalodon’ opens with another drum pattern from Pedrollo and a load of ‘wah-wah’ before they career into a huge classic stoner groove before the rattling ‘New Babylon’s Wall’ takes us further up the astral plane until we get to ‘We Are Aliens’ which is a proper bruiser with some interesting synths over the top. Things go psych again on the awesome ‘Cyber Slaves’ – it’s a low and slow psych blues that flows over you before it’s back to the heavy stoner of ‘Pyramids’ to close.
Not too many stoner bands with keyboards in their ranks but Kayleth use them to great effect, adding colour and depth thereby allowing the guitar the focal point. Heavy and melodic with loads going on under the weight of the riffs and grooves. Just a great heavy rock record from a great heavy rock band.
