Fresh off their JOSIE Music Award, Rock Band of the Year 2023 win, The Almas are going from strength to strength. With one massive US tour under their belt and another set to begin soon in the UK, they’re certainly ones to watch in the up and coming rock scene.
Crowns is the type of single that showcases the band’s growing potential. Lyrically straight and to the point with a punchy delivery, the message here is one of triumph in the face of those who want to see you fail. Interestingly it’s not specified within the lyrics what type of relationship is being referenced; it could be a controlling romantic partner, or perhaps an unfair boss, it’s open for the listeners interpretation. This is a popular theme within music currently, and an excitingly inclusive one.
The message in the track is one of courage and boundaries being set; it doesn’t matter now what has been done to me, just that I’m unapologetically walking away, head held high.
The track oozes female rage and empowerment which is a wonderfully refreshing vibe from a hard rock band which has only one female presenting member. Not surprisingly the band also advocates hugely for mental health awareness and support, particularly among veterans.
Fans of Citizen Soldier and Within Temptation will find plenty to enjoy here. Lead female vocals from Crystal Teigland are edgy and gothic, yet fresh with an earthy tone. Frank Slifka, Josh Sukowski and Andrew Ehredt combine talents with drums and guitar to create a riff fuelled, bass powered track that will have your heart racing and hairs standing up on your arms.
