Defences – The Almost

Review By Dave Martin

London based metalcore quintet Defences consists of Cherry Duesbury on Vocals, William Young on Keyboards and Vocals, Calum Wilmot on Guitar, Owen Hughes-Holland on Bass and Kyle Parke on Drums. Formed in 2014 the band have toured the UK and played major UK festivals such as Download in 2022. To date they have released two full albums “With Might and Main” in 2017 and “In the Balance” in 2021. In addition they have released multiple singles including their latest addition “The Almost”.

When asked about the track the band commented “With “The Almost” we wanted to dive into the dangers of comparing yourself and your achievements to the people around you, It is all too easy to see the often manipulated, idyllic versions of people’s lives on social media and come to the conclusion that you’re missing out, that you’re not living life to the fullest. To be stuck in a place where you feel like your life has not begun is a horrible and unnecessary feeling, and we wanted to put a name to it. That’s where “The Almost” comes in.

The song starts with an almost warning beat followed by ethereal sounding vocals from Duesbury. She then breaks into more traditional stylings of the metal genre as the rest of the band enter the fray. The more melodic female vocals are then joined by the contrasting gutturals from Young before returning briefly to the airier singing and then to the heavier chorus. A bass interlude commences in the same warning pulse of the intro which precedes a guttural blast by young supported by Duesbury. Following another verse and chorus the song outros to its climax, accented with a brief guitar riff.

The juxtaposition of light and dark in the track works well and this is echoed in the vocal contrasts used by both singers. The percussion is used to great effect in telling the story that the band try to convey in this song.  The band will be embarking on a short UK tour later this year supported by Swarm6ix.
