Review by Linda McDermott

If you like your punk rock hard and heavy, I may just have the band for you.

Hardcore Punk is alive and kicking in the form of new band, Bödel. They originate from Sweden and are on an upward trajectory with their heavy raw hardcore music, even though they are new to the scene. Forming at the end of last year they have moved fast within the punk genre, and they have already signed to American label ‘Atrocious Disarray’, with the band due to release their first vinyl this autumn in cooperation with Sweden’s punk label Distat.

Bödel Line-up 2024 Leya – Vocals Masken – Drums Henke – Bass Arvid – Guitar

Explaining how they got together, they say, ‘when drummer Masken (from ex Antabus, Sub Alert) heard the punk band Chörnobyl where the singer Leya has done some vocal parts, he immediately contacted Leya and her father Arvid (from The Crown, Deny, Mähälium)and asked if they would be interested in starting a band together. He did not want to reinvent the wheel, he just wanted to play d-beat-driven hardcore and punk, the way it has always been done. Henke from Pastoratet and Liptones was also involved on bass, and the first rehearsal was in February 2024, three songs were made and the chemistry within the band was there right away. A snippet video from the rehearsal was recorded and put on their Facebook page – and boom! Promoters and labels worldwide contacted the band and wanted to sign them’.

This debut song is no doubt influenced by all the major pioneering punk bands of the seventies and early eighties and in particular the band Discharge. The band have managed to capture the essence of punk history in one song. The song is heavy, as you would expect, as it drives through at a blistering pace that is reminiscent of those heady days when punks were at their most anarchic. It is loud, and has brash vocals, sung in Swedish, and delivered with unrestrained intensity by their fierce front woman, Leya, whose voice alone commands attention as they honor the roots of the genre, which I’m sure will be admired by those who love original punk rock music. The band’s commitment to preserving the quintessential punk spirit is evident in every chord and word, delivering a nostalgic yet fresh energy that both old-school fans and new listeners can appreciate.

Bödel are keen to keep the punk genre alive and thriving in its most authentic form, and I think they achieve this with their debut single. Their music is a defiant proclamation of rebellion and a raw expression of emotion, tapping into the primal energy that defines hardcore punk.
