Release date – 12th July
Review by Linda McDermott
Do you like a mix of hard rock, grunge and metal music? You do? Well, here’s a band that just might tickle your fancy. Black Lesion are a three-piece hard rock band based in Edinburgh, Scotland, who have been together since 2018 and who take their influences from bands such as Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath, which in my opinion is a great starting point for any band.
The band tell me they got together “after guitarist Andrew Murray’s band, White Lightning, disbanded, he joined forces with vocalist and bassist, Andreas Koutoupas, who had been in numerous music acts prior, and sought to find musicians for a new project. The duo collaborated on Lesion’s initial material, producing a variety of alternative-style tracks, before recruiting Craig Whitelaw on drums. Whitelaw brought his divergent style of drumming to the table to refine the group’s sound”. Having a ”what you see is what you get” attitude, we aim to make as much noise as we can with our music.
Band Members:
Andreas Koutoupas – Lead vocals and bass
Andrew Murray – Guitar & backing vocals
Craig Whitelaw – Drums & backing vocals
“Delusion” is the debut single from their upcoming E.P., “The Human Essence,” with the track exploring the theme of being ensnared in a flawed system with no apparent escape, ultimately condemning future generations to a similar fate. It critiques the societal pressures that prescribe academia as the singular pathway to success in life.
Black Lesion delivers an exceptional song with this, their latest single. Andreas’s distinctive deep tonal voice sets them apart, adding a rich emotional layer to the track. The song’s solid tempo drives it forward, creating a heavy, head-nodding mix that captures the essence of the grunge era. Musically, they are tight, complementing the vocals perfectly. The raw emotion and intensity make this single a standout, showcasing the band’s ability to blend power and feeling. A must-listen for grunge enthusiasts looking for a modern take on the classic sound.
If you like what you hear in this single, and why wouldn’t you? They have also released a 5 track E.P in 2020 titled ”Mindless Feeding Device”, and a single from that called ‘Sins’ which I really like. This year sees them putting the foot on the gas and releasing the single ‘Bodyslave’ in February and that, along with this new track and future EP sees them forging ahead with their unique sound. Have a listen to their released work on all the usual platforms to get the whole picture of what Black Lesion are all about.
They will be playing mid- September and performing their E.P launch shows in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. The Edinburgh date will be announced very soon, but people can purchase tickets from their social media pages, their official band page or you can message the band members directly.
The Scottish Borders date is the 15th of November at MacArts, Galashiels, where they will be supporting Dread Persephone.
