Review by Linda McDermott

Alternative folk-rock artist Gigi Gold releases her second single, ‘Hot Coals’,

which is taken from her debut EP ‘Souvenirs’ both released on the 17th of July 24.

The West Virginia-born artist’s debut spans a wide range of genres and styles, from folk to rock and blues, and is alluring, rebellious and empowering, covering themes of self-discovery, introspection and vulnerability. The ‘Souvenirs’ EP is a blend of everything from modern folk to classic rock, all at once, familiar and exciting and stamped with her unmistakable style of self-searching lyrics. Gigi explains, “This EP has been such a long time coming for me. Some songs were tucked away in voice note ideas for years, so I’m beyond excited to release them into the world. It really takes you on a journey and gives an idea of what else is to come. I worked with the most amazing songwriters, musicians, engineers, and artists on this EP, and I’m so grateful to every person who helped make it happen. She explains, “‘Hot Coals’ is a song about realising you are your own worst enemy and ultimately the cause of your own pain. “It is an uncomfortable reflection on self-loathing, self-destruction, and the critical moment when you decide whether to remain the same or transform into something different. The inspiration came from the phrase ‘holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned”.

This released features a guitar-led track that is both emotional and thought-provoking. Its laid-back feel draws listeners into the essence of the music. For me, Gigi’s voice is hypnotic and complements the instrumental backdrop, weaving a compelling story that lingers in the mind. The lyrics serve as food for thought, encouraging reflection and introspection. This combination of soothing melodies and profound narrative makes the track a captivating listen and has me closing my eyes to take it all in, just so I don’t miss any of it.

This song fits perfectly within the tempo and atmosphere created by Gigi with this EP, and I can honestly say there’s not a bad track among the five songs. I get vibes of the band, All About Eve, from the late eighties and I loved them. I thoroughly recommend you have a listen to, not just ‘Hot Coals’ but the whole EP and if you’re lucky enough to live near one of the venues she is playing at, get yourself along and have a great night.

Lyrics: Hot Coals

Hot coals I’ll swallow it down into my soul

Hot coals I know it’ll burn but I’ll take it in slow

I know what it feels like

I know what it feels like to burn alive

I know what it feels like

But I can’t help to keep it alight

My bones I know it’ll ache, and the fever is cold

My bones Easy to break when you’re outta control

My soul Stumbling round looking for hope

My soul Baby it’s burned,

Will you paint it in gold

I know what it feels like

I know what it feels like to burn alive

I know what it feels like

But I can’t help to keep it alight

I know what it feels like

I know what it feels like to burn alive

I know what it feels like,

But I can’t help to keep it alight

I can’t afford to slow it down I won’t let you see me doubt

Do ya Understand Do ya Understand Do ya Understand

Hot coals don’t make a sound

This heat will not back down

Hot coals, hot coals, hot coals

Taking the crown for my own I know what it feels like

I know what it feels like to burn alive

I know what it feels like

But I can’t help to keep it alight

I know what it feels like

I know what it feels like to burn alive

I know what it feels like

But I can’t help to keep it alight
