Single – Hung Up On You
Release 12th July
Review by Linda McDermott

On 12th July, The James Taylor Quartet (JTQ) release their brand-new single ‘Hung Up on You’, from their forthcoming studio album which will be released on 7th October. They describe the song as ‘a slice of Medway style punky/new wave rock’n roll, that is a fast and furious rant about an obsessive unrequited love that refuses to die’.
JTQ have been around for over thirty years, but James is formally from the 80’s band The Prisoners and since covid he has been writing and playing for the band and making albums with Billy Childish, who has released over one hundred and fifty albums from his many projects.
He says of ‘Hung Up On You’ “the song was left over from a writing session with The Prisoners, and it was interesting to see how my JTQ guys, usually funk players, took to this approach. We had a lot of fun in the studio, and I think you can hear that in the recording”.
Formed in the 1980s, the band is primarily known for their vibrant fusion of funk and acid jazz, captivating audiences with their dynamic rhythms and intricate musical compositions. With a back catalogue of both studio and live albums, EP’s and singles there is something there to appeal to everyone who’s roots are in funk and the surrounding genres.

This track is a punk-influenced song reminiscent of the Ramones, the legendary punk band who they supported back in 1986. With its upbeat, energetic feel, it takes me back to travelling in the car with the windows down, blasting out the album ‘Pleasant Dreams’ by The Ramones, filling the air with all those summer tunes. The song captures the essence of punk music, marked by fast tempos and a driving beat that bops along nicely, and because of that it will appeal to a wide range of listeners.
The James Taylor Quartet show their versatility by venturing into different musical territories with their adventurous spirit and musical abilities and have announced a series of upcoming shows to highlight their talents. You can catch them at the venues listed below in the Autumn.
