Fahran – The Hope that Killed me

Review By Dave Martin

I first discovered Fahran a few months ago after I photographed guitarist Chris Byrne when he subbed into another band which included members of Dragon Force.  Since he introduced me to the band, Fahran have established themselves as a one of my favourite groups of recent years. Their exciting brand of music features heavy guitar riffs, pounding drums and gutterals in some tracks and more ballad style melodic vocals on others. Their variety of tracks are sure to appeal to a wide range of rock and metal enthusiasts and as such are likely to be a staple on many a fans playlist.

To date Fahran have teased the publication of this album by releasing several staggered tracks that include “Hate me”, “Godless”, “Sever the Ties” and most recently “Who Created Me”. These singles have also been accompanied by music videos that are available on Youtube.

This album is the third release by the band following on from albums “Chasing Hours” (2014) and “Vapours” (2019) both of which were self-produced. The Nottingham based quintet comprises Matt Black on vocals, Chris Byrne and Jake Graham on guitars, Joshua Ballantyne on bass and Josh Fahran on drums and they have been active since 2012. They have graced many high-profile festivals, including Download, Bloodstock & Hard Rock Hell and also played alongside the likes of Young Guns, UFO, Black Peaks and many more.
When asked about the bands influences, guitarist Chris Byrne comments “The biggest one is Alter Bridge , also we all grew up loving Iron Maiden. Some Shinedown and Black Stone Cherry in there, and also some British metalcore, Architects and While She Sleeps”.  It is clear that these bands have influenced the bands writing, and this is apparent in the various stylisations in the different tracks on this album. The varied tempo, use of multiple guitar techniques and different rhythms from the back line help add interest and a difference to the collection of songs.

The album kicks off with “Godless”, a monstrous anthem that opens with huge energy, heavy vocals and strong guitar riffs. The catchy chorus will draw in listeners and have them singing along, something that is repeated through multiple tracks on the album.. The second track “Hate me” has a raw, emotional feel and when asked about the meaning behind the song Chris Byrne explains “the song is about rejecting modern relationships and dating, but questioning is it out of principle or if it’s out of being scared to connect with people, whilst you sit alone not connecting with anyone and end up not liking yourself because of it, hence the main hook of the song being ‘Hate Me like you mean it’, as if you’re saying it to yourself”. The contrast in the record gives a varied feel. I have been a fan of vocals that can meander from gutturals to melodic choruses ever since first encountering Corey Taylor and this album provides that.

Tracks such as “Black Hearts” give prime examples of this contrast and remind me of “Where’s Billy”, one of my favourite bands of all time. The guttural introduction is a far cry from the singing on the album’s final track “When it’s just me” that has soft and raw emotional vocals.

The intro to “Marizion” has a nu metal feel to it and wouldn’t be out of place at the start of a Linkin Park track. How this group remains unsigned is a mystery to me as they have all the makings of a top band. They are planning to go out on tour next year and I would encourage all readers to attend their nearest event. I watch this space in anticipation and look forward to seeing them live. “The Hope that Killed Me” is due for release on 4th October
