Review By Paul Taggart
Rifftera is a metal band from Finland, formed in 2010 by Janne Hietala. Initially a studio project Rifftera later morphed into a flesh and blood band who have released two albums to date. There has been a silence since 2019 but ‘Quicksand’ is the second single from an ep called ‘Coda’ due later in the year.
Rifftera propose they were influenced by the Swedish melodic death metal band Soilwork and this is evident on the bruising intensity of ‘Quicksand’. Tricky yet intricate thick riffage opens ‘Quicksand’ giving way to hoarse vocals on the verses and a clean sung chorus, clean yes, but still rough around the edges. There is an extended guitar onslaught, including a frenzied solo, before the chorus returns and the whole song speeds to a close.
‘Quicksand’ is a memorable slice of modern melodic death, clinical sounding to some who may prefer their death metal to be puked up by a zombie tramp but to any fans of heavy music, it is worth checking out.
‘Quicksand’ is out now, the band’s ‘Coda’ ep is out on the 11th of October.
