Until 9 – Adam and Eve
Every so often you discover a gem of a band in an unlikely environment, and this is the case with Until 9. An originals band that also act as a tribute to System of a Down, they were a late replacement at the recent Rock the Mote Thunderdome festival in Maidstone. I was blown away by their energy, stage presence and musicianship. The group comprising on Paul Johnson vocals/bass, Tom Spendlove on guitar and Mark Greenwood on drums. Hailing from Sheffield the band have played two major UK festivals this year at Call of the Wild and Maid of Stone.
Adam and Eve is the first single released this year and is accompanied by a music video that appears to have been shot in an abandoned office block and has a dark and sinister feel. The track itself has an interesting vocal mix ranging from gutturals, to rapping to the haunting choruses. The chorus is the most distinctive part of the song and is a variation from their most popular tracks “Headstone” and “Do you Feel Alive?” due to the vocal stylings (that are underpinned by the bands heavy sound including pinched harmonics). Guitarist Tom describes the song as “Adam & Eve is about sinful extravagance, and what happens to the morality of people when they indulgence to excess. It’s imagining morality as a commodity that people can lose, and that someone or something will snap it up at the first opportunity”.
This track is expected on the bands forthcoming album, and I wait with anticipation for its release. Until 9 is an up-and-coming band that are destined for the big time so go and see them while they are still playing smaller venues.
The band have several dates left on this year’s tour and will be playing the following events:
October 5th The Rigger, Newcastle Under Lyme
November 9th Metal Monocle, Leicester
November 16th Corporation, Sheffield
November 29th The Tache, Blackpool
December 6th Tap N Tumbler, Nottingham
December 14th The Bunkhouse, Swansea
December 21st The Limelight, Belfast
December 29th The Lion, Castleford
