Review By Glen Parkes

David Rodriguez may have remained relatively under the radar for many, but within Texas songwriting circles, his name carried significant weight. Voted Texas Songwriter of the Year three times, Rodriguez’s lyrical storytelling and raw emotion were held in the highest regard. Before his untimely passing in 2015, Rodriguez teamed up with Dutch band The Rhythm Chiefs to (re)record nine of his best songs. Shelved for nearly a decade, these recordings have finally seen the light of day, offering a glimpse into the rich soul of a man whose songwriting legacy is undeniable.

The opening track, Wonder How It Feels (03:54), sets the tone for the album with its introspective lyrics and easy-going rhythm. Rodriguez’s voice is soothing yet filled with emotion, perfectly complemented by The Rhythm Chiefs’ polished instrumentation. The band’s ability to balance a laid-back feel with complex melodies elevates the song, providing the perfect backdrop for Rodriguez’s reflective narrative.

One of the album’s standouts, The Lonesome Drover (05:49), showcases both Rodriguez’s gift for storytelling and the musicianship of The Rhythm Chiefs. The song takes listeners on a journey through a dusty, desolate landscape, where themes of solitude and longing come to life. The track’s spacious arrangement lets Rodriguez’s words take center stage, while the slow-building instrumentation adds layers of depth to the already poignant story.

Rodriguez’s Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy (06:27) brings out a darker, moodier side of his songwriting. The Rhythm Chiefs manage to capture this haunting atmosphere through their subtle yet impactful playing. The swirling guitar work and steady, almost trance-like rhythm create a hypnotic quality that perfectly matches the song’s introspective lyrics.

One of the more light-hearted tracks, Lucky Ole Me (04:42), features a bouncy rhythm and upbeat feel, showcasing Rodriguez’s versatility as a songwriter. The cheerful vibe of the song contrasts with some of the heavier themes explored on the album, making it a refreshing break while still maintaining the album’s cohesive sound. Here, The Rhythm Chiefs’ tight instrumentation shines, with the guitar work adding just the right amount of twang.

The track South Holland Woman (03:42) nods to Rodriguez’s time in the Netherlands, blending his Texan roots with European influences. It’s a heartfelt ode to a woman who captured his heart, with a melancholic tone that tugs at the listener’s emotions. The melody flows smoothly, supported by an understated rhythm section, allowing Rodriguez’s storytelling to take center stage.

In Visions of Europe (02:58), Rodriguez paints vivid pictures of his travels, blending nostalgia with a sense of displacement. This short yet powerful song feels like an emotional snapshot, showcasing Rodriguez’s ability to capture moments in time with precise, poetic lyrics.

The album’s crown jewel is perhaps Ballad of the Western Colonies (04:33), which dives deep into themes of history and colonization. Rodriguez’s social commentary is sharp, with each line cutting through the complex narratives of the past. The Rhythm Chiefs back him up with a slow-burning rhythm and intricate guitar work that adds weight to the song’s subject matter.

Closing out the album is The Friedens Angel (06:59) and Ballad of Wanda Jewel. The former, a nearly seven-minute epic, is filled with rich imagery and poetic musings. It’s a slow, meditative track that showcases Rodriguez’s ability to weave intricate stories with his lyrics, while the latter closes the album on a more subdued, melancholic note, drawing the listener into Rodriguez’s world one last time.

This posthumous release of David Rodriguez’s recordings with The Rhythm Chiefs is not only a gift to his long-time fans but also a treasure for those just discovering his music. Each song offers a glimpse into his soul, revealing a songwriter who poured his heart into every lyric. With The Rhythm Chiefs’ tight, thoughtful accompaniment, these tracks have found their perfect home. Ten years after they were recorded, this album feels timeless—an essential listen for anyone who appreciates great storytelling and masterful musicianship.
