Single – Cult of Personality
When – 8th November 24
Review by Linda McDermott
Hailing from Oxfordshire, UK, Molly Karloff have quickly made their mark on the rock scene. The band’s debut EP ‘Supernaturalation’ and their full-length album ‘Breaking Out’ earned widespread critical acclaim, with standout tracks like “Higher Than the Sun” and “Black Flame.”
“Cult of Personality” brings Molly Karloff’s signature energy, featuring infectious riffs and a dark, gritty sound to address the unchecked power and hypocrisy in modern politics. Frontman Simon Gee’s lyrics expose the dangers of celebrity-driven politics, where charisma overshadows policy and accountability fades. Inspired by grunge and metal greats like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, the song is a call to action, urging listeners to rock out while reflecting on today’s pressing issues.
Simon Gee says, “This track is about how easily society falls for a figurehead, even when it’s clear they’re manipulating the truth. It’s about how the cult of personality in politics overshadows real policies, and we’re seeing the effects everywhere. The frustration I felt watching this unfold poured straight into this song.”
The song itself is a great grunge track and an anthem that grabs your attention from the very first beat. With a rhythm that immediately gets your foot tapping, the song pulses with an infectious energy that sets the tone for the entire song. The gritty production complements the raw, angst-filled vocals, delivering a single that oozes intensity.
What really stands out is the anthemic quality of the track, particularly in the chorus, which is irresistibly catchy. After just a few listens, you’ll find yourself singing along, drawn in by its powerful hook. It’s the kind of song that sticks in your head, a testament to the band’s growth in both sound and confidence.
The song also highlights the band’s musical strengths, with the beat serving as a backbone to the song’s structure. It’s more than just a catchy tune, it’s yet another step forward for the band, showing their ability to craft songs that have deep meaning while pushing their creative boundaries. This single feels like a statement of intent, marking the band’s continued rise and solidifying their place in the grunge scene.
The band have plenty to shout about as they continue their journey, with their previous single, “She Said,” skyrocketing to success, gaining over 350,000 video views on Facebook and securing significant radio play from Planet Rock, MMH Radio, and Hard Rock Hell Radio. Despite the pandemic, Molly Karloff continued to thrive, even teaming up with legendary producer Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Bring Me the Horizon) to re-release “She Said” for the mental health charity, MIND.
Now, with Grammy-winning producer Mike Exeter (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest) behind the mixing board, “Cult of Personality” is set to continue the band’s streak of powerful, no-holds-barred rock anthems.
Following the release, Molly Karloff will perform “Cult of Personality” live at the Hard Rock Hell Festival in Great Yarmouth, UK, on Saturday, 9th November 2024. This performance is part of their ongoing tour, with more live dates planned throughout 2025, so make sure you check them out on their socials for further updates on where you can see them.
