Review and Photos By Ken Jackson
Last night, as the crowd gradually filled up outside The Tuesday Night Music Club, I couldn’t help but think back to the first time I saw Connor Selby and his band take to the stage. It was February 2019, back then he had a quiet, understated presence, barely known to many in the audience —but even then, he captivated the room. Five years on, his talent and presence have grown stronger as has his confidence Since that first encounter, Connor has become something of a sensation in the blues scene, winning Young Artist of the Year in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and even taking home the Blues Artist of the Year title in another poll.
This may have been his third appearance at TNMC, but I’ve also been lucky enough to catch more of his performances at various clubs, festivals, and intimate garden gigs in the last few years . Every performance reaffirms his ability to connect with the audience, leaving each venue with a few more devoted fans than before. Connor isn’t just a remarkable songwriter; he’s an extraordinary guitarist with a unique, soulful voice. Watching him evolve from a modest, soft spoken performer into the confident artist he is today has been a joy. His lyrics often reveal the personal reflections of a young artist on the rise, and he shares his stories with a refreshing honesty that resonates deeply. Of course, an evening with Connor Selby wouldn’t be complete without his top-tier band. Last night, the line up included the incredible Martin Johnson on drums, the brilliant Trevor Boxall on Bass, and the one and only Stevie Watts on Organ and Piano.
Their combined talent elevated the performance, as they moved through two powerful sets featuring songs from Connor’s debut album, Made Up My Mind, his self-titled second album, and even a few tracks from his upcoming third release, hopefully due in May 2025 As the second set drew to a close , the audience rose to their feet, giving an enthusiastic ovation that was warmly acknowledged by the band. They closed out with a stunning rendition of “Emily” from Connor’s second album—a perfect finale to a fantastic night of live music. There’s truly no better way to enjoy an evening with friends than in a cosy venue like the TNMC, where the music is always varied and excellent . Special thanks to Richard Dunning for keeping this club thriving, to Mike on the sound desk providing impeccable audio, and to the wonderful bar staff who always complete the experience. It was, without a doubt, an evening to remember.
