Review By Halina Wegner
Marcus Trummer’s debut album, From The Start, set for release on November 15th via Gypsy Soul Records, is a beautifully crafted journey through blues, soul, Americana, and rock. Trummer’s reputation as a “precocious guitarist with vocals that carry a wise-beyond-his-years weariness,” as noted by the Calgary Herald, is well-earned. His blend of genre-rich influences and storytelling captivates listeners from the first note to the last, creating a modern album that’s deeply rooted in musical tradition.
The album kicks off with Holdin’ Out for You, where Trummer’s vocals and guitar work introduce listeners to his signature style: a mix of grit and emotion. Tracks like Let You Down and Hard Time dig deeper into soulful territory, with contributions from Commoners members Miles Evans-Branagh on keys and Adam Cannon on drums. Together, they infuse the songs with a rhythm that’s lively yet steeped in emotion. Evans-Branagh’s piano skills in particular lend a rich, organic vibe that grounds the album in blues tradition.
Featuring ten standout tracks, From The Start showcases Trummer’s versatility and soulful musicality. The opening track, Holdin’ Out for You, sets a warm tone, featuring smooth guitar work and powerful, emotive vocals. Tracks like Let You Down and Hard Time lean into his bluesy side, reflecting both the weight and grit that earned Trummer awards like “Blues Recording of the Year” at Calgary’s YYC Music Awards.
One of the album’s shining moments is Waiting for Change, where the contributions from Miles Evans-Branagh on keys and Adam Cannon on drums bring the track to life with a rich, layered sound. Trummer’s collaboration with Canadian soul artist Samantha Martin and her horn section—Tom Moffett on trumpet and Andrew Moljgun on saxophone—elevates tracks like Break My Fall and The Only Thing, infusing them with a vibrant, soulful energy.
Trummer’s lyrics often touch on resilience, as heard in Ready to Go and Let the Devil Win, where he explores life’s challenges with an old-soul perspective. His soulful vocals are matched by Nicky Lawrence’s background harmonies, adding depth to each track and enhancing the album’s emotional impact.
Trummer’s accomplishments are impressive: he’s a former winner of the “Prophets of Music Emerging Artist Award” at the YYC Music Awards, a 2022 Maple Blues Awards nominee, and, most recently, the winner of the 2023 Telluride Blues Challenge. With From The Start, Trummer proves why he’s earned such acclaim, delivering an album that’s as authentic as it is memorable. Fans of blues, soul, and Americana will undoubtedly find something to love in this impressive debut.
