Review By Glen Parkes
Brighton-based metal juggernauts SYPHA deliver an electrifying punch with their new EP, Borderland. Since forming in 2022, the band has built a reputation for merging the crushing riffs of metal heavyweights like Avenged Sevenfold and Deftones with the infectious melodies of acts like Blink-182 and Halestorm. The result? A blistering sound that’s both unrelenting and irresistibly catchy.
Borderland is a testament to SYPHA’s rapid ascent, cementing their position as one of the most exciting acts in the UK’s metal scene. From the opening moments of “Dirty Floor”, the band lays down a ferocious blend of pummeling riffs, dynamic vocals, and hooks sharp enough to lodge in your brain for days. Alicia Pilling’s voice is a standout force, effortlessly shifting between raw, emotional growls and soaring melodies.
The EP’s second track, “Limbo (See You on the Other Side)”, showcases SYPHA’s ability to balance heaviness with haunting beauty. The melancholic undertones of the track are perfectly paired with its explosive choruses, creating an emotional rollercoaster that leaves a lasting impression.
The crown jewel of the EP is its closing track, “The Afterparty”. As Pilling describes, the song is a showcase of the band’s evolved and heavier sound. Darkly poetic lyrics meet adrenaline-pumping rhythms, creating a track that’s as cathartic as it is anthemic. Whether blasting through your speakers or performed live, “The Afterparty” is destined to become a fan favorite.
SYPHA’s ability to channel their influences while carving out their own distinct identity is what makes Borderland so compelling. It’s easy to see why their music videos for earlier singles “World’s End” and “Limbo” have racked up tens of thousands of views—this band knows how to connect with their audience, both on record and on stage.
With a stacked festival lineup in 2025, including appearances at Hammerdown Festival and Breaking Bands, SYPHA is poised for a breakout year. Borderland isn’t just an EP; it’s a statement of intent from a band that’s ready to take the metal world by storm.
