Single – The Melancholy Season

When 12th February 25

Benmont Tench, legendary keyboard player and founding member of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is set for the release of his second solo album The Melancholy Season on March 7th.

In anticipation of the forthcoming release, the album’s title track “The Melancholy Season” is debuting now alongside a video. He says “the meaning of the song is subject to every listener’s interpretation, but I will say that the ‘Orion’ in the song is the constellation Orion, whose arrival in the night sky above my old house always signalled the coming of colder weather,  and the emotional change that came with it.”

The Melancholy Season

With a career spanning five decades, Tench is celebrated as one of contemporary music’s finest keyboardists, renowned for his exceptional work on the organ and piano.

Tench has not only shaped the sound of the Heartbreakers but has also contributed to an impressive array of recordings with a diverse roster of artists, including Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, Alanis Morissette, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, the Chicks, the Replacements, The Screaming Trees, John Prine, Waylon Jennings, John Fogerty, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash.

The title song on Benmont Tench’s new album, The Melancholy Season, his second solo record after four decades at the keyboards in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, began as a poem, inspired by the autumn chill of a Southern California evening under the constellation Orion.

“At the house where I lived for many years, in the hills overlooking the San Fernando Valley, Orion was only visible in the fall and winter,” Tench explains. “I associated the constellation with that time: ‘Oh, there’s my friend.’ But that season, when it starts getting cold in California, has always been a bit melancholy to me.” That passing of warmth and time in his poem eventually led Tench back to a song he had written years ago but never been able to complete.

With ripples of organ framing Tench’s tenderly rusted singing and meditative piano, the tick-tock of a drum stick on a snare rim sounding like a clock counting down the hours, “The Melancholy Season” is the spectral, gripping entrance to an intensely personal triumph that has been a long time coming.”

This is music that demands attention as it enchants, the sound weaving its way as it captivates the listener. It is beautiful in its restraint, gripping in its subtlety, a doorway into something deeply alluring and universally resonant.

Watch out for the album release on the 7th March for what will be packed full of more enchanting songs.
