“The Warning” Sells Out Brixton

Review and Photos by Dave Martin / Faversham Photography

Just before Easter the Mexican rock band “The Warning” sell out the O2 Academy in Brixton supported ably by guitar guru Sophie Lloyd. The Villarreal Vélez sisters have come a long way since their performance in London two years ago and clearly have a devout following culminating in a 5000 strong crowd for the event.

First to the stage was guitarist Sophie Lloyd, known to many for her youtube channel and being the guitarist for Machine Gun Kelly but is an amazing artist in her own right. The evening marked 6 months since her first headline show and crowd showed their love and appreciation for Lloyd from the moment she entered the stage while playing the intro to Top Gun. Joined on stage by Fiancé Chris Painter on Drums, guitarist Christian Rivers and vocalist Marissa Rodrigez. Throughout the set Lloyd delivered a blistering performance of tracks from both her EP “Delusions” and first album “Imposter Syndrome” showing her stagemanship and technical ability that drew the crowd in and will have garnered her many new fans from those in attendance to see the headline act. The audience could be heard singing along and Lloyd left to rapturous applause at the end of her set.

Setlist 1. Top Gun Theme, 2. Battleground, 3. Hanging On, 4. Won’t You Come, 5. Runaway, 6. Sophie Solo, 7. Enter Sandman (Cover), 8. Imposter Syndrome, 9 Do or Die

Building tension for the main act the back screens displayed stunning visuals before the sisters took to the stage. The trio comprising Daniela on guitar and vocals, Paulina on drums and Alejandra on bass. The three made their entrance all dressed in striking red outfits. In the crowd there were individuals that had been to every show on the tour demonstrating how committed a following the group have amassed in such a short time.

Starting off the set with popular track “Six Feet Deep” the group were met with cheers and singing. From the front of the stage you could feel the strength from Paulina’s drums with every stick movement delivering a powerful hit. The fierce performance continued through numerous tracks with the audience active in their appreciation. Following track “Apologize” Alejandra and Paulina left the stage leaving Daniela to showcase her talents on the guitar. As she starts the intro to “Choke” the crowd starting singing before Daniela being rejoined by her sisters and they continued their audible barrage.

At times the audience even continued singing songs after they had concluded which is not something I have seen often before and showed the love they had for the band.

Throughout the entire set the group had strong interactions with those gathered. The visual display provided by the lighting and screen visuals really added to the atmosphere of the event and helped the group deliver a well-rounded performance. It is clear to see why the band has gained so much momentum and why their songs are so popular and this live performance will only serve to enhance their reputations with the UK audience. Following “Evolve” the three left the stage with the crowd begging for more to which the ladies obliged with a two song encore of “Narcisista” and “Automatic Sun”.
