Single – Mercury God
Release Date – 2nd May 2025
Review by Linda McDermott
New Saints formed in 2010 in Wolverhampton when cousins Andy ‘Spon’ Spencer (bass) and Connor Emms (guitar/vocals) started writing songs just for fun. Things clicked fast, and with Dez Wootton on drums, the band quickly found its core. That same year, they recorded their debut Songs for the Black Hearted, boosted by past touring experience with big names like Skid Row and Anthrax.

After a few guitar swaps, longtime friend Rob Grosvenor joined, completing the lineup. The band hit the road hard, until tragedy struck in 2011 when Andy was diagnosed with terminal cancer. True to form, he played until he physically couldn’t, passing the bass to family member Pete Emms. Andy sadly passed in 2012, and the band paused, only reuniting annually for ‘Rock for Spon’ to support cancer charities.
Fast forward to 2025, they now have a harder edge and a new album dropping on the same day as the single, the New Saints are charging back into the scene stronger than ever.

This single is nothing short of a belter. It’s a track that wastes no time getting under your skin, with sublime riffs running riot from start to finish, it grabs you by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t let go.
Built around a steady driving beat, the song carries a confidence that’s infectious. There’s a groove here that feels effortless but hits hard, keeping everything grounded while the guitars do their thing, twisting, turning, and lifting the whole track into something that demands to be played loud.
Then there’s the chorus, it’s a soaring, shout-it-back moment built around the line “dance with the devil.” It’s one of those hooks that instantly lodges itself in your brain, and you can already picture crowds roaring it back at the band in unison. It’s bold, it’s catchy, and it’s tailor-made for a live setting.
Connor’s vocals are pure New Saints, gritty, confident, and immediately recognisable. They don’t overcomplicate things; they just let the song breathe and build, giving those killer riffs space to shine. And shine they do. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a car, listening on headphones, or strumming along with an imaginary guitar, this is the kind of track that gets the blood pumping.
As a single, it’s a smart move. It captures the essence of the band as it stands strong on its own, I think fans old and new will love it as it’s a total winner. Watch out for the single and the album on the 2nd of May.
