Review By Halina Wegner
There’s a rare comfort that comes from knowing some voices never fade, only deepen with time. For over three decades, Counting Crows have mastered the art of telling stories that feel lived-in—raw, poetic, and heartbreakingly honest. With Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, frontman Adam Duritz and the band deliver a stirring reminder of why they remain one of America’s most cherished songwriting institutions.
Combining the already-released Suite One with fresh material, this full-length collection weaves its way through introspective corners of the soul, capturing moments of joy, regret, and reflection with the ease of a band who’ve walked every line they sing.
The album opens with “With Love From A-Z,” a mid-tempo, acoustic-driven heart-tugger that sets the scene with Duritz’s unmistakable voice—weathered, sincere, and emotionally bare. It flows effortlessly into “Spaceman In Tulsa,” a standout lead single that balances cosmic yearning with down-to-earth storytelling. It’s Counting Crows through and through—lyrically rich, melodically layered, and deceptively simple.
“Boxcars” and “Virginia Through The Rain” continue the momentum with rootsy instrumentation and cinematic phrasing. You can hear echoes of August and Everything After here—not in repetition, but in the continued evolution of that foundational sound. The Americana soul is still intact, but more refined.
The album’s heart arguably lies in “Under The Aurora.” It’s where everything—lyrics, atmosphere, and arrangement—align in a track that feels like standing still under a vast sky, waiting for something to change. The folk-infused instrumentation and layered melodies are meditative and haunting, making it an instant fan favorite.
“The Tall Grass” and “Elevator Boots” bring urgency back into play, the former with its organic build-up and the latter with a road-weary optimism. “Angel of 14th Street” flirts with gospel-tinged grandeur, providing one of the album’s most emotional payoffs. It all culminates in “Bobby and the Rat-Kings,” a sprawling track that feels like the perfect closer: nostalgic, slightly ragged around the edges, but glowing with warmth.
Duritz, as always, sings not just with his voice but with every part of himself. There’s an intimacy here that only deepens over the years, and it’s made all the more powerful by the band’s restraint and instinct for letting the songs breathe. Charlie Gillingham’s keys hum like a memory, David Immerglück’s guitar work sparkles with subtlety, and the rhythm section locks it all into a timeless groove.
What Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets! does so well is blend the old and new, not just in terms of sound, but in spirit. It’s not just a continuation of the band’s legacy—it’s a fresh chapter that holds its own among the classics.
