On 14 October, His Lordship release new single, “Johnny Ain’t Got No Beef”, the latest track from their lauded album ‘Bored Animal’.

Clocking in at a little over two minutes, “Johnny Ain’t Got No Beef” is arguably the most pop moment on ‘Bored Animal’suncompromising and glorious celebration of raucous rock ‘n’ roll. Kicking off with an infectious guitar line from frontman James Walbourne, it’s a song which hooks the listener in, gives them a good shake, and doesn’t let up until it comes to an abrupt end.

‘Bored Animal’ features 11 short, sharp songs crammed with multiple ideas and whip-smart lyrics, clocking in at just 38 minutes. Conceived and recorded live in under two weeks at Edwyn Collins’ studio in the Highlands of Scotland, with engineer Sean Reed and mixed by David Wrench (Manic Street Preachers, Let’s Eat Grandma, Blur, Baxter Dury).

Throughout the new album, guitarist/vocalist James Walbourne and drummer Kris Sonne race through ferocious songs with clever lyrics, which lean into scorching rock ‘n’ roll (the abrasive “I Fly Planes Into Hurricanes”, “Old Romantic”, needling “Downertown”), distorted punk (the ramshackle “Marc-Andre Léclerc”), tornadic noise rock (“Weirdo in the Park”), throttling garage-blues riffs and feral howls (sub-three-minute “The Sadness of King Kong”), and even psychedelic fantasias (“Derek E. Fudge”).

As with their debut,‘Bored Animal’ makes room for an instrumental (the album-closing Western noir “Gin and Fog”) and Sonne contributes lead vocals to a track (the aforementioned “Derek E. Fudge”).

And while ‘Bored Animal’s songs take cues from vintage rock ‘n’ roll, the album is decidedly not a retro rehash or homage to the past. When His Lordship make music, their mighty, rambunctious roar emerges naturally, realising that to leave something that’s a mistake is where the magic is.

‘Bored Animal’is out now on Psychonaut Sounds. Available on vinyl and CD, digital and streaming platforms.

His Lordship are currently touring the US, where they’ve been supporting Johnny Marr and the other night James joined him on stage to play on a bone-rattling version of The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?”.
