| Shona McGarty became one of the UK’s most beloved soap actors for her role as Whitney Dean in ‘Eastenders’, but she has been radically spreading her wings and diversifying her talents since leaving the soap last year. As well as starring in the title role of the West End hit ‘Bettie Page, Queen of Pinups’ and a guest starring role in Danny Robins’ ‘2:22 A Ghost Story’, Shona has also dedicated her time to realise her full potential as a vocalist. Now she takes the first big step towards fulfilling that ambition as she shares her debut single‘Unapologetically Me’. Listen HERE. “Unapologetically Me” marks a bold new chapter for Shona, showcasing her distinctive voice and empowering songwriting. The track was written by Shona and produced by acclaimed hitmaker Steve Anderson (Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Westlife). The quality of her voice is undeniable, rising naturally from its understated introduction before powering into soaring high notes rich with emotional intensity. The song is the perfect vehicle for her talents: a high drama ballad reminiscent of the classic divas, leading to a dazzling crescendo supported by swooping gospel vocal harmonies and stirring strings. Shona says, “I wrote ‘Unapologetically Me’ as a reminder to myself, and to anyone who’s ever felt pressure to be someone they’re not, that it’s okay to simply be who you are. Having spent years in the public eye, surrounded by glitz, glam, and expectation, I’ve often felt the need to play a character, to present a polished version of myself that fits what people want to see. But beneath all that, I’m just human, I’m silly, sensitive, strong, and imperfect, and that’s okay. This song is about stripping away those layers and celebrating authenticity. It’s a declaration of freedom, of learning to love every part of myself, and of standing proud in my truth. Unapologetically.” While ‘Unapologetically Me’ is Shona’s debut single, fans have already had a taste of her talents. Most notably when she performed a heart-warming rendition of The Beatles’ classic ‘Let It Be’, which has amassed 8 million streams on Spotify since it was released to support the mental health charity MIND in 2021. Another jaw-dropping moment followed in 2022 when she performed her take on Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ at the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC’s Festival of Remembrance, accompanied by an orchestra and a choir. She has also used her talents to support other charitable organisations such as Great Ormond Street, Children In Need and many more. With more new music on the horizon, Shona is poised to make an unforgettable impact on the pop landscape. |
