Oli Brown and The Dead Collective – Live – Classic Grand – Shock City Productions

Review By Darren McIntyre

Oli Brown is a guitarist/singer-songwriter/mix engineer/producer from Norfolk, England, who has been active in the music industry since 2005. Oli has been successful as a solo artist as well as part of RavenEye and opening for the one and only Joe Satriani, but he decided that being part of a collective (see what I did there) was the best way forward; the band has released 3 EPs: Prelude, Prologue & Epilogue, with a full album currently in production. The boys have been tearing up stages around the country and are opening up for many of the country’s best artists, and tonight they are getting ready to take to the stage of the world-famous Classic Grand in Glasgow. Please sit back as I take us through this thought-provoking rock ‘n’ roll talisman as he and his band get ready to rock. the place is filling up nicely and the air is thick with anticipation as the house lights dim and the boys saunter onstage and get us all warm and fuzzy as they launch into –

Goliath – haunting cymbal rolls ooze from the stage as a sweet, melodic guitar pick gets the track off the ground as the boys fire up the engine and let this bad boy come at us. The dark, brooding vocals flow freely from the stage as the pounding rhythm section controls the groove from the side of the stage as the boys settle into their set with a real mellow opener. The place is silent as the boys change gear and really let the track breathe as the twin guitar riffs tear through the Classic Grand with ease, and this killer track certainly leaves its mark. The deep, crisp grooves are wrapping themselves around this killer track as we feel ourselves being sucked into the dark, soulful world that is The Dead Collective. The track is building momentum as the 3 boys deliver a faultless rendition that is controlled by the thundering, full-on rhythm section that hits us with pounding snare drum kicks as the cymbal crashes rain down on us as the boys shift through the gears with this impressive opener. The place erupts in a hail of applause as the boys thank us for coming out. next up –

Everything You Want – The grungy-style groover comes to life with a meaty, pounding snare drum beat as the sweet, melodic guitar picks get the track moving and grooving. The soulful, dark vocals are tearing through the venue and letting us know that these boys mean business as the foot-stomping groove eases through the track. As we get into these guys with ease, the place is fixed on the stage, as the dark, brooding lights really give this trio a stage to which they bring the intensity, swagger and real energy that is just on the money. Oli slips in with a real killer solo that allows this track to wrap itself around us and let us feel the emotion attached to this epic arrangement as the boys go about their business and steadily win us over with their melancholic, moody lyrics that really tell us what these boys are all about; the place shows its appreciation as we roll into

Cracks – There is a real haunting echo rolling through the venue as this dark, soulful number gets us ready as the tune kicks off with guitar riffs that are oozing from the stage as Oli lets his killer vocals lead the way as the place has really taken these boys to their hearts. The rhythm section leans in with a cool, dark beat before we feel the snare drum punches grab our attention as the track builds and builds as the boys deliver a real thought-provoking, well-written piece that just showcases these boys and what they are all about. The dark, mellow number has real attributes that set these boys apart from anyone on the circuit right now, let me tell you, as they really grab us and deliver a no-nonsense set that will have us talking about it for a long time to come. The killer twin guitar licks are pulling us one way then the next as we feel the electricity pouring from the boys as the rhythm section controls the flow of the track with its precise, pounding, meaty grooves that are just taking us on the journey with the boys, coming at us next –

Estranged – The sampler groove opens the track as the boys stand front and centre and let their guitars do the talking as Oli leans in and lets his dark, melodic vocals take the track onwards. The rhythm section comes through and gives us a meaty, punchy snare drum beat as the cymbal crashes rain down on us as this real crisp arrangement opens and just drops upon us from a great height. The composition is a real mixture of mellow, brooding lyrics and a deep thundering rhythm section that is all wrapped in a delicious two guitar assault that just allows these boys to grow on stage as the maturity shines through from this killer trio as they are real masters of their craft as they navigate freely through the song and really deliver well thought out lyrics, powering guitar riffs and a deep, thundering groove that has us fixed on the stage as the boys shift through the gears and really deliver something special here tonight, we catch our breathe as Oli thanks us for coming out to catch him and the boys early which brings a huge cheer before we move onto –

Heard It All Before – We change tempo as a real heavy riffed guitar intro is joined by a punchy snare drum kick that really gives this track the ammo it needs to really give us what we came for tonight. The pounding bass kick is really letting the groove flow as Oli brings his soaring, melodic vocals to the arrangement as the boys really hit the ground running with this killer piece that has us stamping our feet and punching the air as we feel the energy oozing from the boys as they deliver a slick, crisp set that is just grabbing our attention as a corker of a solo oozes from the stage as the place just goes nuts for this power trio as they drive their juggernaut show right through Glasgow tonight. we are ripping through the set as we come to –

Haunted – The rhythm section kicks in the doors and hits us with a real killer salvo of snare/bass kicks and cool cymbal crashes that really let this track break free with its intense lyrics, cool riffs and melodic beat. Oli comes in with his killer vocals that just allow the track to tell its own story as the stop-start groove really gets us all worked up. The arrangement really gets the place moving as we really get into this killer trio. The musicality is just awesome as the boys set out their stall and let us feel what they are all about. The cool bass kicks are controlling the depth of the track as we get sweet, mellow guitar licks that are filling every inch of the venue as the boys dig deep and really give us their all and then some as we are fixed on the stage, and although it’s dark, it really adds to the mystery of this impressive trio as they set about their business with precision as the crowd are really getting into their headspace and loving every second of this epic set. we roll into the last track of the evening in the form of

Home Sweet Home – The boys thank us for coming out and watching them do their thing, which brings a huge cheer as the cool, dark, brooding guitar picks fill the air as the last track grabs our attention. Cool cymbal rolls add to the mystery of the last song as we watch in awe of these boys as Oli comes in with his sweet, dark, haunting vocals that really set the scene for the track as it continues to really deliver with intense tones that are somehow magical and really lets us drift off to another place as the track erupts into life with a shredding, power-driven riff that really lets the boys express themselves. The tempo is a real sultry groove that is met with lyrics that define what the track is all about as the place just stands still and is fixed on the stage as the boys go about their business and really cast a spell on us with their electrifying groove, killer riffs & punchy rhythm section that tells us that these boys are storming ahead and are ready to bring us that album that we so crave.
