Review By Smudge Smith

racket,Raucous Yorkshire rockers Sour Tusk have returned with a mighty hunk of masculine Motorhead infused metal/boogie that’s as rough as a badger’s bum and louder than the one o’clock gun. The music is fed on a diet of highly spiced kebab meat and copious amounts of beer, so much so that all the bands’ fingers are covered in grease and chip fat and they’re seeing double. They don’t half make a wonderful racket though.

If you’ve ever met any of the band, then you won’t be surprised with the intro – ‘nuff said. ‘Mission From God’ is the start of the party. It’s raw and shouty, and if you’re looking for subtlety, you can fuck off because this is as subtle as a sledgehammer. Singer/guitarist Jake Johnson does have some fine lead lines, though. They get rougher and readier on ‘Kick It In’, which is almost thrash and straight out of the Motörhead book of rock n roll. A nasty greasy riff and pounding rhythm with a gang-like vocal with everything turned up to eleven. ‘Hail! Hail! Rock N Roll’ is all of the above, but some tasty Hammond from Ryan Taylor adds some colour before it’s back to the heavy rock n roll of ‘Turn It Up’, which I most certainly did. ‘Under My Skin’ slows down a bit on a tidy slice of boogie and is the closest thing to a love song this lot will get, then ‘Man Of The Cloth’ is fairly simple and gets proper heavy, and that weight is continued on ‘Crazy’. Drummer Nic Rudd rattles out a little motif at the beginning of ‘Monster In Me’ before they career into the riff, which again is straight out of the Motörhead catalogue. Nothing wrong with that! Things slow down on ‘It’s Alright’, which has a tasty stomping groove, before final cut ‘Going Out In Style’ does exactly that on another bullish rocker.

I love this stuff. It’s honest, real, and upfront and not pretending to be anything else, with minimal overdubs, if any! Get the beers out, bang your head and shake your hips because this is the soundtrack to a great night in or the precursor to a great night out. A winner all round!
