Rachel Bolan Steps Into The Spotlight With A Gritty, Hook-Filled Solo Triumph
Review By Glen Parkes
For more than four decades, Rachel Bolan has been known as the driving force behind Skid Row’s low-end thunder, helping craft some of hard rock’s most enduring anthems. While his songwriting fingerprints have been all over Skid Row’s catalogue since the late 1980s, Gargoyle Of The Garden State marks the first time Bolan has stepped fully into the spotlight under his own name. The result is a deeply personal, unapologetically honest record that blends punk attitude, hard rock swagger, power-pop melodies and New Jersey grit into one of the year’s most enjoyable rock releases.

Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz, whose résumé includes work with Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice In Chains, Evanescence and Skid Row, the album feels both familiar and fresh. It captures the essence of everything that has influenced Bolan throughout his life while allowing him to explore musical avenues that perhaps would never have fit comfortably within the framework of his day job.
Opening track Anything But You immediately sets the tone. Driven by infectious hooks and crunchy guitars, it showcases Bolan’s knack for writing memorable choruses while maintaining a raw edge. It’s a statement of intent that announces this is far more than a side project.
Things get heavier on At War With Myself, which features the unmistakable presence of Danko Jones. The track dives into themes of internal conflict and self-reflection, wrapped in a muscular hard rock arrangement that perfectly balances aggression and melody. It’s one of the album’s strongest moments and demonstrates just how naturally Bolan’s songwriting adapts to different voices and styles.
Lead single Memory offers one of the record’s most emotional moments. Rich with nostalgia and layered with heartfelt lyricism, the song reveals a more vulnerable side to Bolan while retaining the melodic punch that runs throughout the album. It’s easy to see why it was chosen as one of the album’s flagship tracks.
The Skid Row connection arrives in full force with See You On The Other Side, featuring longtime bandmate Dave ‘Snake’ Sabo. The chemistry between the musicians is immediately apparent, delivering a song filled with warmth, friendship and reflection. Meanwhile, Bridges, featuring Steve Conte, continues the introspective mood while offering one of the album’s most melodic arrangements.
If there is a track destined to become a fan favourite, it may well be Jet Black Universe. Featuring the phenomenal guitar work of Nuno Bettencourt, the song explodes from the speakers with energy and attitude. Bettencourt’s signature flair elevates an already excellent track into something truly special.
The pace remains relentless as Big Stick arrives with a powerhouse guest appearance from Corey Taylor. The song is packed with swagger, punch and larger-than-life personality. It is loud, dirty and gloriously unapologetic, embodying the spirit of the entire album.
Pretty Hell and Rock And Roll Star continue the momentum. The latter sees fellow Skid Row guitarist Scotti Hill join the party, delivering a track that feels like a celebration of the highs and lows of a life spent chasing music. There is an infectious joy running through the song that makes it impossible not to smile.
By the time Devil In The White arrives, Bolan is still finding new ways to keep listeners engaged. The track combines dark lyrical themes with irresistible melodies, proving once again that his songwriting remains as sharp as ever.
Closing track Walk Away features the exceptional talents of Damon Johnson and serves as the perfect finale. It carries a sense of resolution and reflection, bringing the journey to a satisfying close while leaving listeners wanting more.
What makes Gargoyle Of The Garden State so compelling is its authenticity. This is not an artist chasing trends or reinventing himself for relevance. Instead, it is a veteran musician embracing every aspect of the music that shaped him. Punk rock, glam, hard rock, Britpop and power-pop influences all coexist naturally, creating a record that feels timeless rather than nostalgic.
Bolan described the album as “every bit of my soul,” and that sentiment rings true from beginning to end. Whether delivering heartfelt reflections, hard-hitting rockers or singalong anthems, there is a genuine sense of personality in every track.
For fans of Skid Row, there is plenty to enjoy here. For those discovering Rachel Bolan as a songwriter beyond the bass guitar, Gargoyle Of The Garden State offers a fascinating insight into one of rock’s most underrated creative minds. Packed with memorable hooks, stellar guest appearances and enough attitude to fill an arena, this debut solo outing is an undeniable success.
