Review by Linda McDermott
Matt Jones and The Bobs first came together in Southwest Virginia in 2011 while studying at Radford University. With a shared love of Americana, roots music and classic rock, they built a sound based on honest songwriting and the sort of songs people can see themselves in.

Their debut album Brother’s Hymn arrived in 2014 and helped them make an early mark with songs about small-town life, love, loss and growing up. The band stepped away in 2015 as life moved on, but the connection between them clearly never disappeared.
Now back together, they return with fresh energy and a stronger sense of identity. Their roots in Americana, folk and Southern rock still run through the music, but there’s added depth this time round. Touches of 90s influence, a little grunge grit and fuller arrangements give the new material extra character without losing the heart of the band.
That heart has always been in the songwriting. Their songs deal with love, heartbreak, struggle, resilience, and the moments that shape who we become. There’s a familiarity to what they do, but it never feels dated or stuck in the past.
This next chapter begins with their self-titled second studio album Matt Jones and The Bobs, a record that feels like the sound of a band picking up where they left off and moving forward with purpose.
Their latest single Isn’t It Strange sums that up well. Matt Jones says it came from looking back on their final year in college and realising how special that time was. It’s about friendship, memories, and those rare moments in life when everything seems to fall perfectly into place.
Isn’t It Strange is led by acoustic guitar and unfolds with a chilled, laid-back feel that makes it instantly easy to settle into. There’s a natural warmth to the arrangement, nothing forced, nothing overdone, just a song happy to let its mood do the talking. Matt’s vocals come through clear and assured, and the tone of his voice suits the track perfectly, adding even more to its relaxed charm. It carries a real summer feel, the kind of song that drifts along effortlessly and leaves a good impression. Put simply, there’s nothing not to like here.
