KELOWNA – SUPERSTAR: A DEBUT THAT PUTS THE PEDAL TO THE METAL

Review By Glen Parkes

There are debut albums that arrive quietly, testing the waters and waiting to see what happens. Then there are albums like KELOWNA’s Superstar, records that sound like a band has walked into the studio with something to prove and absolutely no intention of holding back. From the opening moments, this Scottish five-piece make their intentions clear: this is rock music built for loud stages, raised fists, big choruses and audiences ready to sing every word back.

Formed in Scotland in early 2024, KELOWNA have wasted little time establishing themselves as a band to watch. Their early EP opened the door, but Superstar feels like the moment they kick it wide open. What makes the album particularly impressive is that, despite being a debut, there is very little sense of hesitation. The band sound confident, hungry and, most importantly, comfortable in their own skin.

At the centre of it all is vocalist Davy Wilson, whose songwriting ideas provide the foundations for much of the material. Rather than simply presenting finished songs to the band, Wilson brings melodies, lyrics and stories into the room, allowing the rest of the musicians to add their own personality. The result is an album that feels like a genuine band effort rather than one songwriter surrounded by session players.

The opening track, “Midnight Rider,” immediately establishes the classic-rock foundations upon which KELOWNA have built their sound. Guitars drive the song forward while the rhythm section gives it the weight required to make an impact. There is a sense of movement throughout, the kind of track that feels equally suited to a festival stage or a packed rock club.

“Second Place” continues that momentum, bringing a melodic edge into the heavier framework. KELOWNA understand that good rock isn’t simply about volume; it is about hooks, dynamics and giving the listener something to take away after the final note.

Then comes “Wild and Free,” the album’s latest single and arguably one of the clearest statements of intent. There is an undeniable sense of freedom running through the track, with the band embracing the sort of big, accessible rock songwriting that demands to be played live. It is easy to understand why this has been chosen to lead the charge into the album release.

“Raven Lady” brings another shade to the record, while “Meet You” demonstrates the band’s ability to balance their heavier side with melody. “The Wordsmith” is particularly interesting, showcasing the importance KELOWNA place on storytelling and lyrical ideas, while “Insanity” pushes the energy levels higher.

The second half of Superstar doesn’t allow the momentum to disappear. “Monster” carries plenty of attitude, while “Song for Cathy” offers a more reflective moment before “Faith in the Music” brings the album to a fitting conclusion. That title says plenty about KELOWNA themselves: this is clearly a band driven by their love of what they do.

Their live credentials are already developing quickly. Appearances at Heartland Festival, Winterstorm and Bonfest have helped them build an increasingly loyal following, and listening to Superstar, it is easy to imagine these songs translating into a powerful live set.

There is nothing overly complicated about what KELOWNA are attempting here, and that is part of the album’s strength. Superstar takes the spirit of classic rock, adds a modern edge and delivers it with the enthusiasm of a band still hungry enough to chase the dream.

For a group formed only in 2024, KELOWNA have produced a debut that sounds remarkably assured. Superstar is loud, melodic, energetic and packed with the kind of songs that should sound even bigger when delivered from a festival stage.

KELOWNA have arrived – and Superstar suggests this is only the beginning.
