Big Engine “Hot Summer Night” is exactly the sort of rock song you want playing with the windows down and the volume turned up. After more than a year away, the Jacksonville, Florida rockers return with a bluesy, slide-guitar-driven track packed with sparkling keyboards and plenty of attitude.
What I really like about Big Engine is that they never forget that rock ’n’ roll should be fun. “Hot Summer Night” has a great groove, catchy hooks and the kind of chorus that stays in your head after the song has finished. Tony Mikus brings a powerful and distinctive voice to the track, while his guitar work adds plenty of bite.
There is also more going on lyrically than you might expect. Mikus explores people looking for excitement, attention and temporary satisfaction while others take advantage of those desires. The pressure of a hot summer night becomes a backdrop for human temptation and growing anxiety.
Big Engine have built a huge following by playing more than 150 shows a year, from biker rallies and NASCAR events to clubs across America. Their army of “Big Engine Freaks” clearly knows what they are getting: loud, energetic and good-time rock ’n’ roll.
Having shared stages with names including Buckcherry, Motörhead, Bret Michaels, Vince Neil and Black Stone Cherry, this is a band that knows how to entertain.
“Hot Summer Night” is a fantastic return. Big Engine have delivered another great rock song, and I’m already looking forward to hearing what comes next.
