Glasshouse ICM, Gateshead

4th of May

Review and Photographs by Linda McDermott

Tonight, I am in Gateshead at The Glasshouse ICM to see Collateral, a four-piece band from Kent who are supporting FM on their fortieth anniversary tour. (FM review separate).

The Glasshouse is a very impressive building that has multiple rooms inside it to accommodate a variety of musical performances and tonight the gig is in ‘Sage 2’ which has not only the floor space but two balcony levels to it. The sound in the room is amazing, with its high ceiling the acoustics are just phenomenal.

The band hit the stage at an energetic pace opening with their second single from their forth coming album called, ‘Glass Sky’. It’s a cracker of a song with its anthemic qualities and its rousing beat that grabs you right from the start. Not only that, but Angelo just doesn’t stand still, he’s full of energy as he engages the crowd while bouncing around the stage with mic stand in hand carrying you along with the momentum of the song.

Angelo Tristan – Vocals/Guitar

Jack Bentley-Smith – Bass

Louis Sebastian Malagodi – Guitar

Ben Atkinson – Drums

The band keep up the momentum as they sing songs like ‘Mr Big Shot’ and Midnight Queen. We were also treated to a song close to Angelo’s heart and their latest single called ‘On the Long Road’. It is a beautiful ballad that has a country music undertone to it with its soft and gentle notes that are tinged with sadness.

The guys have classic rock songs running through their veins that appeal to a wide audience. Think Bon Jovi and Brian Adam’s with their melodic music and lyrical compositions and you get the idea. All their songs have a great beat running through them and there is an undercurrent of a country vibe mixed in with their rock music that I really enjoy.

I had the chance to speak to Ben after their great performance and he told me “the tour started on Friday in Nottingham and it was electric and absolutely rammed with

people, to the point that it was difficult to even get out to the merch stand afterwards”.

They are very excited about the release of their new album which they had a kickstarter campaign for and are very grateful to everyone who has supported them get the album finished. Ben goes on to say that “they have worked very hard on it, taking two years to get the songs to the point where they felt that they were good enough to put on the album”. ‘Should Have Known Better’ is due out on the 24th of May and to celebrate its release they are having a launch show for the it at The Underworld, Camden, London on the 26th of May so if you can, get yourself along to that why not go and give them some support.

Tonight is a demonstration of what Collateral are all about and I like it. With a string of singles, two EP’s, a couple of albums and a new one on the way they are more than worthy of your attention

I have to say that all the way home the song that was stuck on repeat in my head was ‘Glass Sky’, have a listen and hear why.

Meantime, check out their tour dates and have a look at the videos below.
