Review By Darren McIntyre
Solomon Hicks is a Blues hotshot from Harlem, New York, who is a thrilling paradox, a sonic contradiction who is an old-soul roots scholar who salutes ancient musical forms: blues, jazz, soul, funk & gospel. Solomon brought us his debut album, Harlem, in 2020, which catapulted him into the blues limelight; the Harlem music scene allowed him to soak up the sonic kaleidoscope that flowed through the city. Solomon drops his killer new single Further On Up The Road from his soon-to-be-released new album How Did I Ever Get This Blue; please sit back as I transport us back to New York with a real edgy, groove-laden piece that will get us all ready for the incoming album.
Further On Up The Road – We get a real bluesy, melodic guitar lick that opens up this toe-tapping blues explosion of sound that just catches our attention as Solomon lets his soulful vocals get the track off the ground. The rhythm section is hitting us with slick, sharp, punchy snare drum fills that really give this track a funk-laden groove that is just magical; the sweet, mellow guitar riffs are just elevating this colossal arrangement as we feel the energy oozing from every note coming our way. The dark, meaty bassline is wrapping itself around us as we get into the beat with this likeable bluesman as piano tinkering notes come at us as they ramp up the heat on this fantastic track that allows us to drift off and feel the groove wash over us. The punchy blues attack is just awesome as we go along for the ride with Solomon as he lets his fingers do the talking in this all-star-assembled number that will have you reaching for the repeat button for sure.
