Review by Glen Parkes – Jace Media Music
The Soho Dukes return with “A Stone’s Throw”, the electrifying second single from their forthcoming album Nighthawks, Acrobats and Everything Under the Moon, and what a glorious, swagger-filled ride it is. This track doesn’t just nod to the golden era of British rock; it revels in it. Imagine the soulful rasp of Rod Stewart, the ragged charm of The Faces, and the gritty class of The Quireboys, all distilled into a single, vintage-styled anthem.
Right from the opening bars, “A Stone’s Throw” crackles with warmth and musical craftsmanship. There’s a loose, lived-in feel to the arrangement that harks back to smoky bars, sticky floors, and nights that stretch into sunrise. But don’t mistake that for sloppiness; the Dukes are a tight, seasoned unit who clearly know their craft. Every note, every lick, and every harmony feels lovingly sculpted, the product of passion and deep respect for the art of proper rock ‘n’ roll songwriting.

A huge part of the song’s charm lies in the stellar guest appearances that elevate it from a great tune to something truly special. Spike of Quireboys fame steps into the booth and absolutely owns the vocal, his trademark rasp and emotive phrasing giving the song an edge. There’s a real sense of storytelling in his delivery, and you can tell he’s having fun with it.
Then comes the cherry on top: Dave “Bucket” Colwell steps in to deliver a guitar solo that oozes class. Recorded at the Sonic Bunker with Gabor Miko behind the desk, Colwell’s lead work is both tasteful and fiery, a masterclass in phrasing and tone. Every bend and flourish carries that unmistakable swagger of a player who’s spent decades mastering his craft. You can hear his joy in every note; it’s the kind of solo that lifts a song straight into classic territory.

The chemistry is undeniable, giving a richness. The track has that essential touch of soul and glamour, with an echo of the classic rock era where every harmony mattered.
What makes “A Stone’s Throw” truly shine, though, is its heart. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, nostalgia, and joy running through every second. It’s a song made by musicians who love what they do and who do it damn well.

In a world of polished pop and formulaic rock, The Soho Dukes deliver a welcome reminder of what real, rootsy rock ‘n’ roll sounds like. With Spike’s soulful vocals, Colwell’s masterful guitar, and the Dukes’ own signature swagger, “A Stone’s Throw” feels like a lost gem from a bygone era, yet it fits perfectly in 2025.
So, pour yourself a drink, turn it up loud, and let “A Stone’s Throw” take you back to when music was raw, human, and gloriously unfiltered. The Soho Dukes have struck gold here—and if this is any indication of what’s to come on Nighthawks, Acrobats and Everything Under the Moon, we’re in for something truly special. A five-minute masterclass in classic British rock ‘n’ roll swagger—authentic, heartfelt, and utterly irresistible.
