Review By Darren McIntyre
Sex Mask are a 3-piece post-punk outfit from Melbourne, Australia, who bring transgressive songwriting draped in dark sexuality. The band have been championed as ‘Australia’s Next Big Import’, who are gaining a rising reputation throughout the music scene. The band have released a slew of singles, and today they bring us their highly charged new EP Body Broker, which I will be reviewing for you today.
Cold – A thumping, dark, delicious low end drops in and lets the track open as cool, melodic vocals ease into the arrangement as the snare drum kicks let the rhythm section tell its own story. The dual vocals add depth and swagger to this toe-tapping punk-esque track as the band gets into our heads with a real punchy, melodic number that just pops. The crisp, clean guitar licks are flowing freely through the track as the cymbal snaps let the groove ease into this kick-ass groover track that is short, sharp, punchy and leaves a statement of intent.
Blisters (Ft Noah Learmonth) – The soulful vocals lean in and let the killer synth tones wrap themselves around this dark, moody track as the snare drum punches control the direction of the track. The mellow guitar riffs are easing freely through the track as we feel the emotion, depth and sheer attitude wander aimlessly through the arrangement. The cool, meaty low end drops epic funk tones that just let the track breathe as the sultry, synth-laden number rushes through the track and really lets it pop as the band delivers a cool, melodic tone that just puts a smile on your face as the band shifts through the gears and lets us have a cool, crunchy, dark piece that just glistens.
Curse – A crisp guitar riff opens the track as a punchy rhythm section brings a solid snare drum beat that lets the bass kicks control the direction of this punky-edgy groover track. The melodic, soulful vocals run freely through the track as a dark, brooding, funk-laden low end drops in with a pulsing tone that adds swagger to this foot-stomping bruiser as the band just lets the track build with a killer beat that grabs our attention as the cool backing vocals leave their mark on this fast, furious groove track that does exactly what it says on the tin.
Dirt – We get a mellow guitar riff to get the track off the ground as the punchy rhythm section brings a cool, solid snare drum beat that allows the rhythm to flow into this cool little number. The soulful, melodic vocals are weaving their way through the track as a cool, pulsing low end leaves its mark with a sludgy, deep tone that wraps itself around this classy arrangement. The band are on their game with this emotion-filled EP that tells us they are back and back with a thought-provoking slab of post-punk-esque songs that have us tapping our feet and reaching for the repeat button as we feel the energy oozing from every member of this kick-ass Aussie outfit.
