GUV (the long-running, ever-changing, and reliably fantastic project of guitar pop extraordinaire, Ben Cook) is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album, Warmer Than Gold, and today he’s kicking off the new year with a cut of perfect indie pop: ‘Chasin’ Luv.’
Arriving January 30th via Run For Cover Records, Warmer Than Gold is an evolution in Cook’s ultra-hooky guitar pop. Earlier singles ‘Warmer Than Gold‘ and ‘Let Your Hands Go‘ leaned into danceable beats and dreamy guitar textures and now “Chasin’ Luv” shows that GUV still has plenty of effervescent jangle and scrappy C86 charm in his sound.
Cook discussed the track saying: “‘Chasin Luv’ was the last song written for the record. We wanted something immediate, an instant hit in the vein of early Primal Scream, and to bring the jangle that was missing from the record, but always present in the older GUV stuff. Noah, Gavel, Matt, and I wrote and tracked it in about 20 minutes. Corey Rose from Color Green came by and laid down her drums in a single take. After everyone left, I worked out the vocals just as quickly. Everything on the song is one take, and from start to finish it was written and recorded in under an hour. It’s my favorite and the best GUV song ever made.”

Warmer Than Gold was made with the help of an all-star cast of creatives, including contributions from James Matthew Seven, Darcy Baylis, Hatchie, Meg Mills of Turnstile, and many more. It’s a record of unstoppable musical motion, effortlessly blending elements of Britpop, baggy, classic indie pop, and first wave shoegaze through Cook’s unique lens. The result is an album that feels in conversation with the entirety of his musical journey—a set of songs whose roots go all the way back to his childhood growing up in between Toronto and England, and travel through his prolific years as Young Guv (“I’m not so young anymore, three letter band names are cool, and I’m tired of being mistaken as a rapper,” he says of the name adjustment), arriving in the present with perhaps the best work of his career.
